As we start this story it is 1989 Japan and the sega master system is a game console that is failing to get large amounts of sales in usa and japan because of the giant game company Nintendo and the Ceo of Sega Hayao Nakayama is looking for a new alternative to the master system.
as Hayao is pondering about what he is going to do a magical two tailed kitsune (fox) sees him from above and thinks "that man looks distressed i wonder if i can help".
So the Kitsune goes down to Hayao and asked "what is the matter something seems to be bothering you". After Hayao calmed down because a two tailed Kitsune just talked to him he replied "My company is looking for a way to beat the gaming giant Nintendo and get our company on the map".
Now the Kitsune had heard of Nintendo and did not care much for them so he said "i will help you with your problem. what do you need?". Hayao replied "i need a game system twice as powerful as Nintendo's game console".
So the Kitsune thought about this and then got an idea. He swept his two tails over an empty desk and where there was nothing before there was a beautiful shiny black game console and the designs for it. The Kitsune then looked at Hayao and said "here is a game console that is more than twice as powerful as the Nintendo Famicom use it wisely". Then the Kitsune flew away by spinning his two tails like a propeller.
Hayao then took the console and the designs to the marketers and they were amazed. They decided to name it the sega megadrive ( it was named sega genesis in the united state because the name megadrive was taken ). They then designed some games for it like alex kidd in the enchanted castle and altered beast. A few months later after the Sega Megadrive was released worldwide it still was not beating nintendo and nintendo had released a console called the Super Famicom that was more powerful than the Megadrive in most ways. so Hayao needed something to make people want the Megadrive and as it happened the Magical Kitsune was not pleased with Nintendo for making a more powerful system. So he went down to Sega's offices in Japan and asked Hayao "what do you need to beat Nintendo?". Hayao replied "I need a great game and a mascot to contend with Nintendo's Mario". So the Kitsune looked around and saw a hedgehog playing in blue paint on a desk ( the hedgehog was artist Nato Oshima's and it's name was Mr. Needlemouse. it had gotten out of his cage and was messing around in Nato's paints.). The Kitsune grabbed the hedgehog and turned him into a game cartridge named Sonic the Hedgehog then he looked at Hayao and said (this is a fast paced game about a speedy Hedgehog fighting an evil man that is taking over the world). Hayao decided to play the game. So he put it into a Megadrive and played it, He thought it was amazing and would work perfectly. So he thanked the Kitsune and rushed to get the game released. The game did great in The USA and edged them over Nintendo for the rest of the Megadrive's lifetime. So sega decided to make a sequel and they added a two tailed kitsune as a playable character to honor the magical kitsune that had helped them so much.
