Nico woke with a start. His heart was racing and for a moment he didn't know where he was. Panic crept through him. When the raven-haired boy recognized the familiar surroundings of the Hades Cabin in the dim morning light, he was relieved. His breath slowly steadied.
It had only been a nightmare, a terrible nightmare. Yet still the images of Tartarus sent shivers up his spine.
Nico rolled around just to find the place next to him empty. For a second he was confused, but then the memories of last night came back to him like an avalanche.
They had been fighting about something Nico already couldn't remember. Him and Leo yelling at each other, the slamming of doors and the painful silence afterwards. When the Son of Hades finally had shaken off his anger and calmed down, he had been alone, his boyfriend nowhere to be seen.
Regret rushed through Nico and he felt tears falling down his cheeks. After a moment he wiped them away, pushing himself off the bed with a determined expression.
He had to apologize to Leo, this was sure. But at first he had to find the missing Son of Hephaestus.
When Leo woke up, he felt every single bone in his body. Groaning, he launched himself up from the floor of Bunker 9 where he had spent the night. The curly-haired mechanic winced while he thought about last night. That terrible fight with Nico…
Leo felt horrible. He had been really unfair to his sweet boyfriend and left Cabin 13 completely unreasoning. Determined to explain and, most important, apologize to Nico, the Hispanic rushed to the front of the building. But he moment he reached the door it opened and a familiar pale face peered inside.
Nico blushed as he saw Leo standing in front of him, hair messy and eyes puffy from lack of sleep. It suddenly occurred to the younger boy that he hadn't even looked into the mirror before leaving his Cabin. He was probably looking terrible. On that thought he looked down to face the floor and blushed even more.
"Nico?" Leo asked, his voice sounding insecure. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have run away last night -"
But the Ghost King didn't let him finish. Within a second, he had thrown himself into the arms of the surprised older boy. Leo immediately wrapped his arms around his trembling boyfriend, holding him as close as possible and burrowing his head in the silky black hair.
"I'm so sorry", he whispered, his voice cracking as he noticed that Nico was crying.
"It wasn't your fault", the younger one replied, still shaking and holding Leo tight. "If I hadn't been so stupid… Just don't ever run away from me again, please."
It almost broke the Son of Hephaestus' heart seeing Nico like that. He kissed him on the head lightly before murmuring softly
"I swear on the River Styx."
