Susan focused on the target in front of her. Regardless of the fact that Father Christmas told her that her weapon would always hit her target she wanted to make sure that she knew exactly what she was doing. She had to be the best she could. She wasn't going to let her family down. When her first arrow missed the target she used her brain and her logic to adjust what she was doing.
Then a dagger flew into the middle of the target. Susan scowled. "Lucy Father Christmas made it sound like you wouldn't even need to go into battle. Let me practice in peace. Go talk to a tree or something."
Lucy collected her dagger and started to sulk. Turning around she focused on her elder brothers who were practicing sword fighting. She plopped down on the ground next to Susan and watched them. She didn't like being alone. Not since Edmund told her he had met Mr. Tumnus and didn't tell her how he was.
Susan could feel her how hurt her sister was even though Lucy was no longer focused on her. Susan sat down hitting the ground gracefully, not rough like Lu did and sighed. "Lucy I'm sorry. It's just I'm afraid I won't be good enough. I need to be perfect and I need to be the best. I always have you know that. I meant it when I apologized for not being fun."
"I'm not upset with you. I just want to do something right for once."
"Do something right for once? Lu you always tell the truth. You were the one to find Narnia. If you weren't doing things right Aslan wouldn't have called you here first?" Susan put an arm around her younger sister to console her.
"What good did coming to Narnia do? I got Mr. Tumnus in trouble. And he was the first person who treated me like something other than a foolish child! I was his friend. And I hurt him and who knows what happened to him. Edmund told me he met him but refuses to tell me how he is."
"Maybe its better if you don't know for the time being Lu. I'm sure Ed will tell you soon and if not I'll make him."
Lucy smiled despite how sad she was. "It's not just that though. Edmund followed me when he met that horrid white witch. If I knew he was with me I could stop him. And then I cried to make Peter help me find Mr. Tumnus."
Susan hugged her. "Don't blame yourself for that. He was your friend and you were upset. I would have done the same thing. So would've Peter."
"It hurts to watch you all get ready for the battle. Because I know that I'm not really going to do anything. It makes me feel useless."
"Lu you're not useless. If one of us gets hurt you will save their life with you cordial. I hope it doesn't come to that but if you weren't here whoever it is would die."
Lucy sat there silently pondering what Susan had told her. She still felt upset and Susan could see it just by looking at her.
"Tell you what Lucy. Why don't you go off and make us some good luck charms for the battle. That way you can be with us. I know I could use some of your spirit in this" Susan smiled as her sister hugged her and skipped off looking for things to make some presents for them.
Susan may not be the best archer just yet but she could tell by the joy in her sister's face that she was the best elder sister Lucy would ever need. And for now that was enough.
