Disclaimer: No I don't own the awesomeness that is Howl's Moving Castle... Oh well! I can still watch it!
They had begun to get worse. Her sweet dreams turned nightmare. They had begun after he had left to fight in the war. At first they were maybe once a week. Two months after his departure, Sophie received a letter saying he had been injured on the battle field. Since then all she could think about was that night on the lake and his promise to her.
She was staying in the house him, his little brother, Markl and his best friend, Calcifer, shares. Although they aren't related, they are her family. She had lost the parents in a car crash when she was 12, leaving her an orphan. His parents took her in, clothed her, and loved her as though she was their own. Those three were all she had left in this world. She couldn't bear to lose anyone else she loved, especially him. If anything, you could say it was a witch, his ex-girlfriend, which had brought them together.
Usually, her dreams go unremembered; it's the nightmares she knows by heart. They wore her out. Cal and Markl saw how his absence and the lingering feeling that he was not coming back affected her day by day after that letter from the military. Fear was frozen in her hazel eyes, exhaustion from all her attempts to distract herself rolled off her body. Even though Cal and Michael were with her, she couldn't help but feel alone.
But she wouldn't give up, not on herself and not on him. The pain in her heart was nearly unbearably, nearly. That spark of hope kept her going, seeing the two others smile everyday kept her feeling alive. The boys had promised him they would look after her, keep her safe and happy, as much as they could, even of that meant ignoring their own loneliness.
It had been almost a year. This last nightmare had been the worst; images of his blood on her hands as she held on to his dying form, his voice so low she wasn't able to hear his final words over her sobs. It scared her more than anything, losing him and not even able to be there for him. Just like always she pushed it away like a memory she didn't want. She had put on her favorite blue dress and brushed out her hair, ready for a new day.
Both Cal and Miarkl were out for the morning. Sitting at the counter she found a letter addressed to her. There was no return address on it and no name to tell her who it was from. Still uneasy from her nightmare, she hesitantly opened it. Leaving a quick note for her family she bolted out the door. Sophie ran as fast as she could towards the train station. Dark clouds formed over the city. Drip, drip went the water as it came down, drip on the ground and drip onto her dress. When she arrived at the station she was soaked through. She hastily looked around, hoping she was on time and hadn't missed the train. As she scanned the crowded platform, she saw a familiar figure. A man with hair as black as midnight and a posture that glowed with confidence.
At home, his little brother and best friend were in a frenzy cleaning up the place. On the counter next to Sophie's note, laid a letter saying "I'm keeping my promise. I'm coming Home."
