Author's Notes: This is Thresh's POV and his thoughts leading up to Clove's death. I think Thresh was far too underrated, come on, he saved Katniss' life! The lines don't match 100% to the film/book, I was writing from memory.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Hunger Games, it belongs to the amazing Suzanne Collins!
I'd left the cornucopia and made camp on the complete other side of the arena. I saw no need to remain close to that place. I needed my supplies to survive. I needed to win. For Rue.
Just short of the clearing I stopped and hovered near the trees. Just then I watched as Foxface ran from inside the cornucopia, her bag in hand. She disappeared into the woods. Untouched. Unseen. I nodded, admiring her actions and I could have kicked myself for not thinking of that. Over to my left, I saw Katniss near a rock. She was scouting just as I was. I was still unsure weather or not to kill her. To my right, Clove was also closing in.
Just then Katniss took her chance. I sighed. "Bad idea" I muttered to myself. Clove was on to her in a second. I ran my hand over the top of my head. "Think Thresh, what would Rue do?" I whispered.
A serge of anger flowed through me as I heard Clove spit Rue's name. I leapt to my feet and dashed towards her. I ripped her off Katniss and flung her to the ground.
"You killed her? You killed Rue!" I screamed into her face, holding her by her neck, her feet hanging off the ground. I know her efforts are useless, Im going to kill her.
"No! No, I—" Clove sees the stone, about the size of a small loaf of bread in my hand and loses it completely. "Cato!" she screeches. "Cato!"
"Clove!" I hear Cato's answer, but he's too far away, I can tell that much, to do her any good. What was he doing? Trying to get Foxface or Peeta? Or had he been lying in wait for me or Katniss and just badly misjudged our location?
I brings the rock down hard against Clove's temple to silence the squirming girl. It's not bleeding, but I can see the dent in her skull and I know that she's a goner. There's still life in her now though, in the rapid rise and fall of her chest, the low moan escaping her lips.
"Clove!" Cato's voice is much nearer now. I can tell by the pain in it that he sees her on the ground.
"You better run now, Fire Girl," I gasp. "For the little girl. You and me, we're even then. No more owed. You understand?" she nods in response, before scrambling upon her feet. We dash off in opposite directions
I grabbed my pack and sprinted into the forest. I stopped once I was a safe distance inside to watch. I never heard the cannon go off. Cato sprinted into the clearing, and dropped his spear at his feet and knelt next to Clove's almost lifeless body. He began to cry into her stomach. Any point now, he will realize it's futile, she can't be saved. I watched his hand circle around hers. She was turning pale. He looked up at her head wound and wiped the crimson blood from her face. He placed a gentle kiss on her lips before rising and screaming "THRESH! YOU'RE NEXT!" I took off in the opposite direction. Not wanting to wait to see if he would carry out his threat. The sound of cannon fire followed me off into the woods.
