Sixty-Seven years of independence, but so much longer have you lived. Do you remember?
It seems as though these memories go back forever,
But it's something that I won't ever regret
Something I won't ever forget,
One day I sailed a sailing ship
Across the sea as she rose and dipped,
But who would have guessed what I then found
From that day forward, I was bound
The little boy who stared back at me from the brush,
I picked him up, held him, 'hush,
It's all okay now, nothing to fear,
You, my child, I will hold dear.'
We taught him our dances, hymns and song
With hope he'd remember forever long,
We taught him the gods, the powers at be,
They were watching over us, I'd hope he'd see
Long into the night I told him tales,
Of bravery, courage, of how we prevail
Long after the fire died out, stopped burning,
We'd watch the ashes and sparks with some yearning
But all grow up, and all grow out
Of these days that I speak about,
But please, keep these traditions in your heart,
And brother, we'll never be too far apart.
Happy Birthday Iceland!
It isn't much, but I wanted to do something to celebrate his birthday with. Anyway, 'we' refers to Denmark and Norway (because the thought of them raising Iceland together is too damn cute), and Norway is the speaker of this poem.
