Just a Spoonful of Sugar

Little Jimmy's favorite movie was Mary Poppins. He liked that she could make anything happen, including but not limited to flying without a ship or plane, going into a chalk street drawing, and making Mr. Banks let loose a little. Unfortunately, she was a total liar. Well, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but, to little six year old Jimmy Kirk, it was the truth. The lie? That just a spoonful of sugar would mask the taste of medicine completely. Were he six years older, he would have called that Bullshit.

And now, here he was, sick, in bed, missing the class fieldtrip to the aero science museum, thinking that no matter how much bubblegum flavor they put into his children's cough syrup, he would always be able to taste the bitter chemicals and feel the slight burn in his throat. What he wouldn't give for a regular glass of hot chocolate. The good kind; with milk and little marshmallows. Even his favorite pajamas (the ones with the little starships on them) couldn't make him feel any better.

"Jimmy, honey. You have a visitor, sweetie." He heard his mother, Winona, call to him. The door to his room opened slightly, and a little head poked around the corner. Pointy ears were slightly green, as a young Spock tentatively opened the door further.

"Permission to enter, Jim?" he asked in his normal formal voice.

"Permission granted, Spock. And how many times do I have to tell you, you don't have to ask?" Jim replied, in his normal exasperated voice. It was a routine they had. Spock would start out all stiff and Jim would give him his patented "lighten up" look, and by the end of the day, Spock would be more relaxed and Jim would be using better manners. It was just the way they worked.

Spock scurried into the room, with his hands clasped behind his back, and looked right, then left, then quickly closed the door and rushed over to the bed. He took the bag off his back, and placed it gently on the ground before looking back at Jimmy. Jimmy sent him an eye roll, and patted the bed by his side. Spock's eyes lit up, and the corner of his mouth quirked up, before he quickly masked his features again, and climbed onto the bed.

"How are you recovering?" He asked, after making himself more comfortable, sitting cross legged next to Jimmy. His eyes led a barely detectable to those that didn't know him, but blatantly obvious to his friend of two years.

"Ah, man. I'm on the mend. You're just lucky you can't get sick with human viruses. 'Cuz you would probably be sick already." There was a silence for a few minutes, then Sock spoke up.

"I brought you something," and he reached into his pack and brought out a PADD, and fiddles around for a few moments, before pulling up a vid. Jimmy's inquiries to what it was were met only with a look of "wait and see". Before long, the opening scene of Mary Poppins was playing, and Jimmy looked over with a huge smile on his face, and snuggled a little bit closer to watch his favorite movie. Maybe it wasn't a spoonful of sugar, but it did make things a whole lot better.
