I ran down the staircase with the birdcage in hand. I needed to get downstairs before he left. I could hear his voice. I could make out words and phrases. I hear him saying goodbye.

"Gilbert," I hollered, "Gilbert, don't leave, not yet."

"But I have to go, Luddy."

I ran through the living room and into the hallway. It was there that I saw Gilbert standing in the threshold of the doorway with eyebrows knitted together. His pale unkempt hair hung in his wine colored eyes that were shaded in annoyance. He looked at me expectantly, waiting for the reason I had to stop him from leaving.

"I want to give this to you. It's a gift from Feliciano, Kiku, and I." Inside the birdcage, a little yellow bird flapped around excitedly. Gilbert's eyes widened as he gently took cage from me. "It'll keep you company In America."

"Thank you, Ludwig; I honestly don't know what to say." Gilbert said. I smiled.

"That's okay but Gilbert; you're going to miss your ship if you don't leave. I'll see you again when you send for Mama and I, okay."

"Okay. Goodbye, little brother, I will see you soon." Gilbert ruffled my hair before he gathered his things. I watched as he set off with his bag on one shoulder and birdcage in his arms.
