"Oh Merlin, we did it!" Tracey Davis exclaimed as the knowledge of what they had just witnessed sunk in. "I can't believe we did it!"
All around her, other students and adults alike were whispering and saying the same thing. Half of them were staring in disbelief, as though they could not believe what they had just witnessed and the other half were looking relieved, as though they had survived the end of the world itself.
Across the field, not too far from them stood the few surviving members of the Death Eaters and the other allies of Lord Voldemort. They too had looks of disbelief on their faces, combined with horror. For them, this was a terrible outcome. Tracey couldn't bring herself to care. They had chosen to back Voldemort and his misguided beliefs out of a misplaced sense of superiority or just fear.
Whatever their reasons, they were broken now. Some were panicking, running for the edge of Hogwarts boundaries to apparate away, while others were throwing down their wands and raising their hands in surrender. A few continued to fight in a disordered mess, but they were no match for the victors and soon fell and the field was soon quiet once more.
"I can't believe it's over," a quiet voice said behind her and Tracey turned to see a familiar pair of beautiful dark-brown almond-shaped eyes. "I can't believe that we actually won and I can't believe we're still alive."
"Neither can I," Tracey replied, a smile crossing her face as she felt a rising sense of happiness rising in her stomach. "Su Li, we did it!"
Su Li smiled and Tracey did something unexpected, even out of character for her. She jumped forward and kissed Su Li firmly on the lips, a kiss she eagerly returned. After a few moments they separated and looked at one another with a mixture of mutual attraction and embarrassment.
"Well um…" Tracey started, looking slightly sheepish. She hadn't actually told anyone she liked girls like that, least of all her best friend outside Slytherin. Especially given some of the…more interesting dreams she had been having about said friend. She could feel the blush crossing her face.
"I…well…" Su Li continued, still flailing about in shock. She didn't seem to be able to say anything either and she was also finding her feet very interesting indeed.
"I'm sorry, I…got caught up in the moment," Tracey finally said and Su Li nodded.
"Yes, yes…caught up in the moment. Of course," she replied and Tracey could have sworn she saw a brief look of disappointment cross her friend's face. But surely that was just an illusion, wasn't it? Then a smile crossed Su Li's face and she stepped forward and pulled Tracey into one of the best kisses Tracey had ever had.
"THAT on the other hand, was something I've been wanting to do for a long time," she said with a smile, before blushing very hard and turning her face away.
Taking Su Li's hand in hers, Tracey and Su Li walked into the castle.
