Takuya Kanbara always walked home alone. It was the most popular piece of gossip everyone listened to. How he had no friends, how he was alone all the time; Zoey's nose wrinkled in distaste as he walked past her group of chattering friends, a tank full of turtles in his hands. Takuya loved animals, despite the rumors that encircled him, he was pretty friendly once one got past his temper. And for some strange reason, she felt like she had to follow him home today. She had nothing better to do during the summer anyway.
Takuya had stopped at the candy store with several large red hot jawbreakers in a bag, walking past the city limits, the river and a grove of trees to a grassy hill on a vacant lot. 'What is he doing?' Zoey thought, watching him carefully from her hiding spot in the bushes. Takuya took a jawbreaker out of the bag and threw it up into the air, where it was caught by a set of large metal jaws.
"What is that thing?!"
Takuya turned around, shocked at the questioning voice. Zoey emerged from her hiding spot, a little ashamed but looked up into a pair of chocalate brown eyes when he took her hand. Takuya pressed a finger to his lips, motioning to the monster towering above them. "Can you keep a secret?"
The whole summer it was just the three of them, laughing over ice cream and jaw breakers, swimming in the river. BurningGreymon, the monster that Takuya had been introduced her to, would watch them from far away in the shade of the tree that resided there with a careful eye. However, like all good things, summer came to an end. That day was the last day of summer. Zoey and Takuya had been hanging out as usual, stopping by the candy store to pick up jawbreakers and ice cream. They sat on the hill as the sun began to set, Zoey laughing at some joke Takuya had cracked. BurningGreymon watched them carefully, as if he was planning something.
Takuya had been reaching for Zoey's hand when BurningGreymon roared, nearly knocking the young blonde down as it's clawed hand scooped up Takuya and threw him in the air. Zoey watched in horror as the monster opened his large jaws and swallowed the tan boy in one gulp. But when he looked down at her, the digimon laughed. "T-Takuya is that you?!" She shouted, even more confused than before.
"Yeah it's me Zoey." Takuya's voice resounded in her ears, making her smile as he held out a large claw to her.
Tomorrow after all, was the first day of school.
