Where Mistakes Lead

He tells himself all of the evidence is right there. Jimmy and Davis are a strong sign to that. She's over it, she's moved on. And then when he least expects it she sends one of those smiles his way, the kind she never spares anybody else, and he thinks maybe there's still a small chance, maybe he hasn't lost her just yet.
He loses himself in the possibility of Lois, though, because he thinks it might be safer. He can't lose Chloe and while Lois has always meant something to him, he sometimes wonders if she loves Superman more than Clark. So he doesn't try as hard with her as he should and eventually it fades and he finds what he has for Chloe never does, never has, never will.
But he hasn't learned from the past, not when it comes to her, and so he plays the best friend for too long and he misses each and every opportunity. Until finally, she shakes her head and grins, "What am I going to do with you, Clark?" And she kisses him and he doesn't make the mistake of questioning it, them, the future. He just closes his eyes, acknowledges how unbelievably right it feels and lets it all come together, as it should have years ago.
