For years, Loki had clung to the simple ideal of proving himself to his father, of stepping out of Thor's shadow, even if only by a little. For years Odin reprimanded him for things, even if they weren't his fault. It didn't take long for Loki to realize that hopeful glances in Thor's direction did him nothing. So he decided he needed a new strategy. The Frost Giants became more of an opportunity then an enemy. But what did it matter? His heart had already shattered, each piece falling slowly, agonizingly. Only part of it remained, held together by tears and blood. So slowly his plan came together, and he only faltered with the news of his heritage. But in the end that only strengthened him, moving him forward. He would make Odin proud of him.
Soon, he became tied up within his own plan. Loki still struggled on, lead by the flickering light of hope from the fire he controlled. It surged with a new power as everything fell into place, but he was still breaking. Each piece falling and claiming it's place in the ruins of his soul. His mind shuddered at the thought of killing Thor, his brother. But memories of Thor's apathy for his situation brought new fire to the flame inside him.
Destruction..
Pain...
"Why do you do this?"
Why not?
He'd already been betrayed by the world, so why not betray it? His mind twisted any logic given to him. People talked, but he heard little. It was all routine now. But that fire surged on, persevering throughout even Thor's return to Asgard.
Confronting his brother was painful, but it was all for the kingdom, right? He will soon be hailed a hero and Odin will truly love him as his son. So he fought Thor. Fought him with all the cunning power he had. And slowly more fragments fell until there was only three left. The largest for Odin, another for Thor, and the smallest for himself. The flame began to die, just a small wisp now. As he hung from the rainbow bridge, shattered as he was, he looked at Thor and Odin. They could sense his decision.
He just didn't see hope anymore. The flame inside him disappeared with a flourish.
Three...
The smallest fragment fell with a clatter.
Thor was his brother. His friend. Temporarily his enemy. Yet he still loved him.
Two..
The next spiraled down with a small sound.
He had clung to the hope of making his father proud for so long, unwilling to relax his mind around the idea. But he really couldn't see a way of making that happen anymore.
One.
The largest fluttered down with little noise, landing on top of the pile.
Now completely broken, he glanced up once more at Odin. He saw concern in his eye. And Loki finally acknowledged the love inside it. It may be far from what he searched, but it was there. Knowing this, he looked down at the deep abyss of space below him and back up at Odin. Feeling a relief unknown to him, a smile crossed his face. A smile full of more sorrow than could be expressed by words.
"LOKI NO!"
And he let go.
