So this is just something that popped up in my head a few weeks ago. I'm not to sure where exactly I want to go with this idea but I feel like it has a lot of potential so I'm willing to give it a try. Hope you enjoy!

Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, this story is for entertainment purposes only.

Promise

"Hurry Princess," requested Sasuke, ushering her up the steps of the royal palace to the grand pillar entrance. "We haven't much time." His voice was heavy with urgency.

As they reached the palace's grand doors he said, "Quickly. Go inside where the rest of the women and children are, the soldiers there will lead you all to safety."

"But what about you?" she pleaded taking one of his coarse hands in her own.

"I, along with every other soldier, shall fight for my people," Sasuke replied with no hesitation, but instead honor and pride.

All the sudden the battle cries of men in both the armies sounded in the distance signaling to Sasuke it was time for him to take leave.

"It is time I leave, my Princess," He told her as the fingers of his free hand wrapped around the hilt of his sword, while the other gave her delicate hand a reassuring squeeze, before letting go.

His hand wasn't but a foot away before his wrist was incased by her pale slender fingers.

"Promise me," the words came out a bit slurred because of how fast they were spoken.

"Promise me you'll come back," she tried again. Her emerald green eyes shone with hope.

"Princess," he sighed, the wind blowing his dark black locks across his handsome face, "I cannot – will not – make you promises I know I cannot keep."

After hearing this, her eyes lot their shine and were dull with hurt. It pained him to see her like this, but what else could he do? He had no choice.

"But I can promise you one thing," at his words her eyes were filled with a renewed hope but one not as strong as the last. Sasuke took a sickening stab to his heart.

"I promise that I shall try. For you Sakura." With that he pulled her close and gave a lingering kiss to her lips.

Those were his last words before he left, off to battle. Probably the last words he'd ever say to her.

"Goodbye," she whispered into thin air, but Sasuke had already left. There was no one to hear her.

She felt something salty trickle down her lips. It was then that she realized she was crying. Hot tears streaming down her pale cheeks, her eyes slightly swollen and red.

Tears because he had left her. Because she knew that he wasn't going to come back. Army leaders never did. Because he would die thinking his love was unrequited. But most importantly because he would die without knowing.

Knowing that she was unconditionally in love with him.

So tell me what you guys think and whether or not you think I should expand on this story. Obviously it will be taking place in the the Medieval times, in other words an AU fanfic. Which would be a first for me but I'm willing to give it a try.

So please drop a review and give me your opinion :D
