"thom, shh, it's ok-"

"...it hurts, Jonny, it really ,really hurts!"

"stay still! just...j-just stay still, ok? you're ok, thom, you're alright, y-you're f-f-fine..."

"jonny..jonny, how am i fine? it feels like somebody's steamrolled me!."

"the ambulance will be here in a moment, thom, just a second...why were you on the balcony? why?! what were you doing, thom?!"

"i was sat looking down..."

"thom, come on..."

"...looking at people. wondering why...w-why they don't see it, too, jon. you see it. don't you? the fear..."

"yes, yes, thom, just stay with me... you fell a long way, 4 whole storeys..."

"did i fall..or was..w-was i pushed, jon? you saw me fall, didn't you?"

"y-you fell, slipped...shh now..."

sirens screamed insistently, deafeningly, but jonny was immune to their calls, because now, he only had ears for thom. his thom. his poor, battered, smashed up thom, who'd fallen backwards off a hotel balcony four storeys up and landed half on solid concrete and half on frozen grass, and was pumping blood faster than anything imaginable, soaking jonny, himself, everything. the paramedics tried to prise jonny away, but he wouldn't move, he couldn't- he'd seen it all, kept replaying in slow motion the horrifying plunge backwards, thom flailing comically through the air, barely screaming, then the sickening thud as...as he thudded to the ground, skidded and hit the wall with a nauseatingly loud snap- arm, leg...spine? nobody could tell, but thom kept his eyes open, kept talking, gave jonny a reason not to declare himself completely insane and run screaming like a banshee, run until he could barely feel, see, hear...

when they finally got thom in the ambulance, he passed out completely, and jonny frantically called him, the paramedics tried desperatly to revive him...but he was gone, gone forever, a hollow shell, the costume of an angel finally shed. and jonny went not long after.
