It had been two years since she walked down the stairs of Blair and Chuck's townhouse. Two years since he watched her marry someone else. Two years since she became Serena Humphrey. Two years since he let her go forever.
He had gotten a call from Chuck a few hours prior. She had gone missing again. He didn't go look for her like Chuck and Blair had. He couldn't bring himself to do it. She had left him before. Left him over and over. But every time she leaves, she always comes back. He doesn't understand why she leaves though. It's something psychological, he knows. But the fact that she does it repeatedly, every single time something goes wrong. He just finds it silly that she still hasn't realized that running away doesn't solve anything.
He knew he should look for her, but he couldn't. He can't put himself out there again just to get broken. He doesn't even know why she left this time. And to be honest, he didn't really care. Because she comes back. She always comes back.
So now he was going to do what he does every time she leaves him. He's going to walk through Central Park at 3 am, he's going to go to their bench, and he's going to smoke a joint. He's going to try to make himself feel numb.
So he packed up his stuff, put on his jacket, and pulled the hidden joint out of his desk. He got in his car and drove over to Central Park. He was almost at their bench when he saw a figure sitting there. He was going to turn around and go back to his car when he realized who it was.
He walked over to the bench and sat down next to her. They didn't say anything for a long time. "You ran away again?" It came out as more of a statement than a question. After a few seconds of silence, she finally spoke. "He cheated." It was barely a whisper. She sounded so broken. He had heard rumors that Dan was cheating on her, but he disregarded them all. But now that she told him, it felt real. Dan Humphrey stalked them all, including himself. He ruined their lives. He bashed them all. He almost murdered his 'best friends'. And they all forgave him. But now, he broke the Golden Girl. He burned her out and now there's no light. It was official. Daniel Humphrey destroyed Serena Van Der Woodsen-Humphrey.
A clap of thunder broke him out of his thoughts. He didn't know what to say that would fix her. They just sat there until it started pouring. He looked over at Serena in one of his old t-shirts that she stole from his drawer years ago, tiny little shorts, and flip flops. He took of his jacket and put it on her shoulders. "C'mon S. Let's go to my place." She was unresponsive. She just sat there. And she looked so broken. He wasn't sure if she was crying or if it was just the rain, but her blue eyes were filled with sadness. He was going to kill Dan Humphrey.
The rain was pouring down harder now and he knew they were going to get sick. "Serena." She stood up and held her hand out. "Can we just… can we just dance in the rain?" He could never say no to her. So he stood up, took one of her small hands in his larger one, put his other hand on her waist, and held her close. And they swayed back and forth to the rain pounding on the pavement around them. And they stayed like that for a long while, until the rain subsided. And then they got in his car, and drove to his penthouse apartment which was way too big for one person. She changed into one of his old sweatshirts and a pair of his boxers. And they ate PopTarts and watched Finding Nemo. And he stared at her instead of the movie. And when he fell asleep, she cuddled into his chest and fell asleep too. And they just hung out like old times. Because this was their normal. And this is how they will start all over again.
