When you loose hope, you loose fear. With hope comes the will to live, which means you loose the will to live and therefore you don't fear death when you loose hope. So, perhaps Kaneki should loose hope so he can grow stronger, and stronger and stronger so he can tear apart the obstacles towards a happy ending with his friends, a happy ending built on bloodshed because this world isn't as forgiving as Disney and it isn't going to let him sing a song and have a happy ending, it's going to make him struggle and it's going to make him go through hell three times over to reach any happiness. Perhaps, this is karma. Maybe he killed the whole world in his past life and this is his punishment, to be born into a world where he'd become a monster, but only halfway so he can't fit in on either side, always in the middle. He's like a half full and half empty glass of water, you can only choose a side with your own set of views. So perhaps, he can loose hope and become strong and he can make his own smooth path for his friends to ride along without doing anything, they could be happy. He can tear himself down to build them up, because it's better to hurt yourself than to hurt others. Maybe his ideas are self destructive but he couldn't bring himself to care. So, with these thoughts in mind he stopped caring for his own life and he strives for perfection, for absolute strength. He needed to be strong, for his friends were counting on him. He didn't consider asking them or communicating them, they don't know what they want yet. They don't know what they need. So, he continued on his way to the happy ending built on bloodshed and tears and he tore himself apart, if only to build his friends up slightly. He wasn't aware that he was tearing them down to build himself up, so he continued on. Never glancing back, only imaging what's in front of him. Never seeing his friends desperately trying to find their way on his curving path that goes in endless loops. He could only see his illusions of happy endings, for there were no happy endings for monsters.
