prologue

-the silence before the storm-

She couldn't believe her eyes.

Where -

Where was she?

Her eyes hurt. Her arms ached. Her head felt like a thousand bricks. And now she was in a such a strange place? The room was sterile white with a single window. Flimsy curtains covered the outside world and any evidence that could possibly tell where she was.

It was on the tip of her tongue.

So familiar, but so foreign. Had she been here before?

Haruno Sakura reached a shaky hand to touch the rough bandages around her head. The surreal feeling of being in someplace that she shouldn't be was starting to overcome her. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.

It had to be.

Why else would she feel so lost? And broken?

It wasn't just her joints that ached, something in her heart gave a painful tug.

Wake up, Sakura.

Wake up.

"Mama? Are - are you still h-hurt?"

She whipped her hand away, her heart giving a sudden jolt. Sakura hadn't even noticed another presence in the room, much less a little blonde girl staring at her with incredibly scared blue eyes. Her tiny hands wrung through her plain black dress. Waist-length hair in a messy ponytail.

Oh God.

Oh God - no.

Her own hands tightened around the white covers, mind racing faster than it could form conclusions. This wasn't happening. This was not supposed to be happening.

Haruno Sakura was not supposed to be back in Konoha. Not while she was still breathing and alive. Konoha wasn't the place for them. Not this Konoha, a faint reminder of what used to be their home.

"M - mama?"

Tears sprang in her beautiful eyes and the little girl voice broke, a sob barely ripping through. Sakura tried to shift on the hard bed, holding her arms as much as she could. Instantly, the five-year old girl buried her head into her chest, her body trembling.

Sakura tightened her grip, eyes scraping around the otherwise empty room. Guards were probably right outside the door. And she couldn't fight her way through it, not with with a certain sobbing girl in her arms.

"Ssh, I'm fine. See?"

She would wait. Wait and see what came their way.

All Sakura knew - deep, deep down in her heart - she would never hand out the precious girl in her arms. Not while she was up and fighting. And not while they were both alive.
