The Moon

The moon had a soft glow. That was Ciel's favorite thing about it. It faintly illuminated the darkness of the night sky.

He could stare at the moon forever if not for the sun. Ciel despised the sun. The sun was too bright. It kept all darkness away and tried to make him forget about it. But how could he, of all people, forget the darkness? The darkness, whether he liked it or not, was his companion. But the moon, unlike the sun, did not hide the darkness. It simply made it a bit brighter.

For a brief time, he thought of the moon as his friend. It was not until the moon disappeared from the sky when he could no longer call the moon a friend. He was angry.

"Sebastian," said Ciel, coldly. "Put some curtains on that window. I don't want to ever look at it before I sleep ever again."

"Yes, my lord."

For the moon had betrayed Ciel when it had refused to glow. He felt as though he were always being betrayed in one way or another. Why did the moon, of all things, have to go and betray him like everyone else as well?

Before Ciel allowed his eyes to close, he noticed that he was sleeping in not the soft glow of the moon, but in darkness.

As far back as he could remember, darkness had never betrayed him. It was the thing that shaped his very soul, his precious, bitter soul.

Darkness was not simply Ciel's companion. It was his friend. That was what he decided on the night of the new moon. Darkness, the very thing that had swallowed the moon, was the only friend that would never leave him.
