~Rooftops~

"Ring around the Rosie,

A pocket full of posies,

Ashes,

Ashes,

We all fall down..."

It was night time here at the small town I call home. I was with my friends on top of the school rooftop. The full moon was out and shining giving us enough light to watch our step. We were sitting around in a circle, passing around the small flickering flashlight and telling ghost stories. Most of the stories I've heard were typical horror stories with vampires, werewolves, and zombies. When the person to my right finished their story, it was my turn to speak. I cleared my throat and began talking.

"This story happened not so long ago. In fact, it happened exactly twenty years ago right on this rooftop. It was rumored that a small group of elementary students were playing here. They were all siblings of students from the high school. The four kids went in a circle, held hands, and walked around a candle that was for some reason situated on the ground.

'Ring around the Rosie,

A pocket full of posies,

Ashes,

Ashes,

We all fall down..', they sang."

I took a breath and continued my story, "The candlelight swayed back and forth... back and forth... and finally went out. The kids fell and everything went black. No one saw what happened, and none of the kids remembered anything about each other or themselves. They only remembered the faint echoing of a song in their heads and the dull light of a candle. People say it was a ghost, others say it was delusional and make believe. Several years later, three of them were killed... one by one... in the same order they held hands on the rooftop. Coincidentally, the cause of death was that they were pushed over a rooftop building. Wax was found on the place where the crime took place... The buildings where they fell off of were rumored to all be haunted."

I breathed out. The flashlight dulled and winked off out of energy. Only the moon was my source of light. I closed my eyes.

"I was one of those four children and I'm the last one alive."
