"Watch yourself Sam."
"I'm not scared of angels." Sam tells her.
Ruby gives him a resigned look and turns and starts walking away. Sam looks back toward the car for a moment before looking back toward the departing Ruby.
"Ruby wait." Sam yells to her.
Ruby stops but doesn't turn around. "What Sam?" She says, in a tired sounding voice. By the sounds of his footsteps, she can tell that Sam is now just a couple of steps behind her. She chastises herself when her borrowed heart starts beating a little faster when Sam puts his hand on her shoulder to turn her around to face him.
"You made it here pretty quick. Sorry I didn't get a chance to call you until with stopped in Des Moines." Sam drops his gaze from her eyes to the ground. Ruby can't be sure why, maybe because he feels bad for not telling her about the angels when he called. Maybe he feels guilty for calling all together. Or maybe just because Dean doesn't know he called her."Did you find a decent place to stay?", he questions as he slowly returns his eyes to hers.
She tilts her head to the side before she speaks. "You make it sound like you care Sam." She challenges him with a raised eyebrow. Sam rolls his eyes and sighs. "Yeah I am staying the same place I stayed back when I was helping Bobby with the Colt. It is a decent enough place, although when I checked in this morning it sounded like the couple in the next room was trying to break through the wall with their headboard. Maybe you can stop by later and we can see if they are worthy opponents. So far we are two for two, we out lasted the couples in both Little Rock and Huntsville. We could go for number three."
Sam chuckles. "Maybe. We have a lot of research to do, and Dean is requesting pie in order to help in his reading."
"Well okay then. Better not keep Dean waiting for his pie. Even us demons know not to get between that boy and his food." That earns another laugh from Sam. Ruby's face then turns serious again. "How is he doing?"
"Dean? Fine I guess, he's not talking much. I am just glad he doesn't remember anything."
A strange look crosses Ruby's face for a moment. "Well just be there for him when he needs it, okay? I meant what I said I am not going to come between you and your brother."
"Thanks Ruby."
"And I no you said you aren't scared of angels Sam, but I'm serious, please be careful. You have demon blood in you, and who knows what that means to them. Like I said, smite first ask questions later." Sam could tell by the look in her eyes she was truly worried.
"Alright, alright I'll be careful." Sam agrees.
"Okay, now go get that boy his pie." Ruby says as she turns and walks away again. She looks back over her shoulder smiling and adds, "Oh and don't forget about later, you know what they says third times a charm."
Sam smiles back and then turns in the other direction. And even though he should be thinking about all the research that is ahead of them, instead he is thinking about Little Rock and Huntsville. He is so caught up in his thoughts he forgets the pie.
