A Forgotten Past Leading To a

Familiar Future

Chapter 1

The walls of the castle shook as the bombardment of artillery kept pounding the magical shield around the Crystal Empire. It felt as if every time they hit it would collapse, but Shining Armor was determined to protect his friends and subjects at all cost. He continued to endure even with each blow wearing him down bit by bit.

"I can't let them get in, not only for their sake, but for the fate of Equestria."

Outside the protection of the doom, the remainder of Cesletia's army and The Crystal Empire Guard we're trying to hold off the advancing forces inbound to the city. It was as if for a moment they were holding the line fairly well, but after the catapults were decimated it seemed not much could slow down the soldiers and their war machines.

"Keep it up lads we need to buy more time for the princess", said Cornell Iron Hoof, hoping whatever they had planned would turn this tide.

Twilight was speed reading through a book from the empire's vast library looking for something, anything she could use that would help stop them. At the same time she felt a large amount of guilt and sadness about what had led to this.

Thinking to herself, "If only I know more about our past I could have prevented this from happening" she thought, " But instead I made it worse, her death is on my hooves, and for that everypony else's is to."

Tears started to run down her face soaking the papers in the book as she flipped through it frantically. Along side her Starlight Glimmer continued to read as well both skimming the vast collection of knowledge as fast as they could, knowing time was of the essence.

It wasn't until Starlight noticed a key word "Guardian" did she begin to shout. " Hey I think found something."

Twilight snapped out of her despair, whipping the tears off her face, as she made her way over to her friend. Starlight began to read aloud, "The Guardian of Crystal Empire… Krystalak, this spell allows the user to awaken the slumbering beast of past trapped under the empire to defend it from those who seek to do it harm."

It seemed kind of sketchy to Twilight, but it might be their best bet to stop them. The two stood back from the book and began to preform the spell. After a moment of silence it felt as if nothing had happened. But then out of nowhere the ground began to shake like an earthquake, and the epicenter was below their feet. Despite the possible danger, they rushed to the nearest balcony of the castle, ironically the one Shinning Armor was perched on, continuing to struggle while holding the shield. They watched in ah as in the middle of town the emergence of a large figure clawed it's way up from the depths below. It was a base color of tan, having pink crystals lined up and down it's back. The eyes were a dark orange covered behind what resembled a purple mask, above crystals that fanned out on it's chin. It looked as if it was pure evil almost like something that King Sombra had left behind during his reign to protect the empire in his absence. It stood still, awaiting what seemed a be a command to fit into it's job description.

Twilight began to shout in as loud of a voice as she could muster. "Guardian of the Crystal Empire we ask for your assistance in defending our home from the foreign invaders who seek to harm what we hold dear" she paused but continued, "Go now Krystalak aid our troops."

And with that mere sentence it spun around and began to rush to the front lines. The group sat and watched it make large imprints it the road as it ran, shaking the ground worse than the large hole it dug on its way up from its slumber.

Iron Hoof began to feel the ground shake from his rear flank quickly spinning around to witness a large creature make it's approach closer to their position. The shield slightly opened allowing the monster to exit the city, without effort it leaped over his forces like a nimble cat and started to lay waste to the enemy.

"This is what we've been waiting for lads push forward", yelled Iron Hoof directing the remaining forces to push back the offensive.

Looking through a telescope Twilight could see the devastation Krystalak was causing the human military, she almost felt a bit of remorse , wishing a peaceful resolve could still be reached to stop the pointless bloodshed. But it would be hopeless Princess Celestia had helped make sure of this in the earlier encounters making and baking a recipe for disaster, with Twilight helping frost it. Even with Celestia and Luna out of the picture, Twilight know it was up to her and the rest of her friends to try and protect what was left of Equestria.

Krystalak let out what seemed like a provoking taunt as it battered back their forces, smashing each tank with ease, swatting helicopters like flies and sending the soldiers scurrying like mice.

The forces began to fallback to the point where it seemed a good mile was between the two fronts. Iron Hoof pondered at what they might try to do next, the likely idea would be to regroup and try and advance again, but with the emergence of Krystalak it seemed a new plan was being formulated maybe even if he was lucky a full scale retreat. He began to regroup his forces trying to setup a defensive line again. Now with aid of the monster he almost felt confident enough to declare this a successful defensive.

Twilight began to feel a bit of relief in seeing the forces fallback, hoping they might all together retreat but she know better he had his eyes on what he wanted and would do anything to get it. As expected she sough the forces stop and begin to regroup. She once again felt the fear return as an individual alone walked out onto the open field towards the city, she recognized the figure and froze in place like a deer in headlights, it was him. His armor was a dull grey, with a few nixes and scratches decorating the front plate. His orange helmet visor reflected the light off the full moon, as he continued his walk of determination. However it was strange to see he was unarmed, wielding only his to bare hands, "Maybe, just maybe we could have peace after all."

Iron Hoof noticed the individual advancing closer and began to hear his soldiers, talk silently amongst themselves "It's him, it has to be, his armor matches the description that the survivors described", said one "We'd better get out of here if we don't want to become like the rest", replied another. Iron Hoof then began to feel himself shake, he know some of those unfortunate soles who had been butchered in his first appearance in Canterlot.

In frustration he began to shout out. "We will do whatever it takes to keep him from reaching the castle, even if it takes us all to stop him."

Krystalak watched as the individual drew closer and began to stare him down. The man stopped his march and looked up at him with what looked almost like a blank emotionless expression, even though his face was hidden under a helmet. Krystalak broke the tension letting out an impressive roar one could say to rival a dragon's. Seeming unfazed by his attempt the man continued to stare until sometime out of the ordinary happened.

In an instance a spark of light emitted from the position the man stood engulfing him in a bright sphere, It began to grow to a size comparable to or slightly bigger than the beast. It began to form into what resembled a figure somewhat of a dragon standing on two legs, but lacking it's wings. It was as black as night, and had bazar fins on its back, down to it's tail as white as snow. It's eyes looked as if the contained an endless blaze in them, with a gaze yearning to make it a reality. It began stare once again until it opened up it's tremendous jaws, letting out a ear bleeding roar.

"SKREEEEONGK"

Soldiers covered there ears as the sound echoed across the battlefield making them moan in pain. It's bazar fins began to light up almost like a Christmas Tree slowly glowing a brighter blue as seconds past. The light began to travel to it's mouth developing a sizzling noise.

"KZZTKZZT"

Before being vaporized, Krystalak could sense the massive amount of heat being generated and quickly leaped right to avoid the impact from the beam of blue light sent projecting towards him.

"KSHHHHH"

However despite it's evasion it had hit its attended target after all. The shield shattered like glass, releasing a large surge of magic back to Shining Armor's horn. The reaction sent him sky rocketing backwards into the castle colliding into a wall. Witnessing what had happened, Twilight, began to become almost limp and fell onto her rear. This was it he wasn't holding anything back, he was going to get his revenge after all.
