(A/N: While I was listening to I am the One reprise, I decided I wanted to know more about Dan and Gabe's relationship [don't get any ideas—I mean father/son relationship] when Gabe was still alive. So…here it is. Also, this is the last story I'm going to be posting for a little while, because I'm going on a class trip tomorrow, and I'll be gone until April 23rd. So I'll see you guys when I get back. Enjoy!)
The One Who Held You
It was Dan's turn to get Gabe to stop crying, which he wasn't exactly happy about. Diana was always so much better than him at getting Gabe to go back to sleep.
"Hey, Little Guy," Dan whispered to his son. He lifted the music box that sometimes calmed Gabe. "How do you turn this thing on? Oh, here we go." The soft, peaceful music filled the room, but Gabe still wouldn't stop crying.
"Shush, shush," Dan mumbled as he picked the baby up and started bouncing up and down gently. "Why don't you understand that there's nothing to cry about?"
Suddenly, as if Gabe could comprehend the words, the crying stopped. "Hey, you stopped!" Dan exclaimed. He was very proud of himself, since he was still getting the hang of the whole being-a-father thing. "Wait, are you smiling?" he asked Gabe, whose mouth had turned into a grin. "You are!"
Still holding his son, Dan ran to Diana, who was napping. "Di! Di, wake up!"
Diana half-opened her eyes. "What?" she said groggily.
"Gabe is smiling!"
Diana was too tired to register the words. "Great. You two have fun." She rolled over and fell back asleep.
Dan and Gabe were still grinning. "Guess you'll have to smile for her some other time, Gabe." He walked back to Gabe's room and sat in the rocking chair, holding Gabe close to him. "But right now, it's just you and me."
(A/N: Reviews are love!)
