Day 3 of Yukio Okumura Appreciation Week is about appreciating his skill or power. When I play RPGs, I am always grateful for characters who are capable of healing, and even more so for people who can fight as well as heal. So while I do find his shooting skill and the fact that he summoned demons on his first try amazing, I truly appreciate Yukio's ability to help heal people and his desire to become a doctor. Though I kinda wonder how it would work out when he's already an exorcist. Just retire, maybe? Would you be able to do that, knowing the way the world is?
Disclaimer: Blu Rose does not own the Blue Exorcist series. She only owns this fic.
Summary: Since Yukio was young, he'd wanted to be a doctor so he could help everyone.
X-X-X
It had started when he was young. Yukio remembered Father Fujimoto reading him and Rin a book about doctors. In it, the doctor helped people who were sick, had broken their arms, and needed shots to make them feel better. "Doctors can make everyone better." And while it didn't change Rin's mind about going to the doctor for a checkup—which turned out to be the following week—it made them seem miraculous in Yukio's eyes. Because maybe, it meant that doctors could cure his ability to see the monsters and demons that infested the world.
But of course, they couldn't. Shiro had told the spectacled child himself, after he wound up asking the doctor if he could do something about his eyes. "Things related to injuries caused by demons are only known to exorcists. And unfortunately, the ability to see demons can't be cured once it's gained." Then it meant that doctors couldn't make everyone better, didn't it? "Maybe they can't heal everyone, but there are lots of people that doctors help to get better. People like your troublesome big brother who gets himself hurt often!"
"But…doctors should be able to help everyone!" Yukio cried, feeling upset.
Shiro smiled and patted the "You want to become a doctor, right? If you work at it and study hard, Yukio, you'll probably be able to help a lot of people, whether they've been hurt by demons or not."
He took those words to heart. If he became a doctor, he'd be able to help people feel better. He'd be able to make his brother better, whether or not he was hurt because of demons or his own violent nature. It was a goal that Yukio promised to achieve.

"YOW! Can't you be gentler?!"
Yukio remained calm as he plucked out another long, sharp, bone-like spine from Rin's tail. "This is the sort of pain that teaches you to be more mindful of a situation."
The older brother frowned. "I was mindful! I dodged most of them! OW!"
The younger brother dropped another spine in the petri dish. "Most isn't good enough. In fact, it might get you killed. Regardless of how quickly you heal, one day I might be able to put you back together."
"You're such a good doctor, anyway, you'd be able to do that. OW! That didn't feel like tweezers, Yukio!"
"That was my way of punishing you for your mistake," Yukio said with a smile.
Rin slumped over, muttering, "You can be a real sadist sometimes, you know? Doctors are supposed to heal, not hurt!"
"I could always put those spines back in if you're dissatisfied…"
"I-it was a joke! Geez!"
