She could no longer see the stars. He had dragged her down into a bottomless pit that she could not escape. It no longer mattered about her elf blood, or how well she resisted him, or how much he liked her, because nothing had a say against her underground prison. Kate could no longer see the sun rise and set, the stars wink on one by one, or feel the warmth that belongs completely and wholly to the sun.
All she could see was blurry, a secondhand picture through yards of water.
Kate could no longer be alone. There was no respite in an underground cavern for anyone to be unseen, especially not the Queen. And Charm was a constant companion, contrary, and impossible to lose in the dark caves.
"Kate."
She turned to face Marak as he walked towards her.
"I'm sorry I'm late."
Her eyes smiled.
It didn't matter if he had taken away the stars, the sun, the moon, and her whole sky. Marak could shine brighter than all of them combined.
