Matt made his way back, following the train tracks to the small pond at the edge of town. He'd always wanted to just get on the back of the train and start a new life wherever it stopped. He wondered if that's what Mello had done. He knew it was dumb.

Near the pond was a trail. He remembered, once they'd come here, actually it was more like Mello had dragged him. They'd had to have been about 10 or 11. It was back when they'd lived in their own little world; their corner of the universe that only stretched about a mile any direction. Back before they had to hold up the weight of the world. It was hard to believe it had been a year.

Mello had this idea, that they'd find a place to have their first kisses. He's been so intent on finding the perfect spot too, it was funny how much of a hopeless romantic he could be, and nice that Matt was the only one who knew it. He missed that Mello. Matt had been smiling as he was dragged along; he never expected it to really happen, but still, he didn't want to ruin the moment. They'd eventually settled on a place between two trees off the side of the path next to the stream, or river, or whatever it was. The light shone through the canopy of trees, and then, it really was perfect as perfect.

The first year without him was the hardest. He really hadn't realized how important Mello really was to him, he didn't think he did either, maybe if he did he would have stayed. Matt had always been shy and never had many friends, but he had Mello, and that was all he needed. Once he was gone, Matt was all alone. The first summer was the loneliest thing in the world.

He was okay now. He wasn't so shy anymore, he had some friends, and he was on his way to happy. He knew he could be alright without Mello, but he really didn't want to be.

He'd decided it a week after he'd left.

As soon was he graduated he'd find Mello and follow him to wherever he was. Maybe he'd take a train.

He approached their spot 'on second thought' he mused 'I think I'd like to have my first kiss here, for him.'
