maya hart was twelve when she saw the boy with the blue eyes and bright smile

he came from texas, he said, and he said that he always found his knuckles bruised before he had time to think

his name was lucas but maya always felt the need to create nicknames for him

she knew why she called him huckleberry, but he didn't (or at least she thought he didn't)

maya hart was twelve when she saw the girl with an unresolved fantasy in her eyes and the simplest greeting stumbling to get out

she had come from two loving parents (something maya had always wanted)

riley wanted to be a princess, and she came to the conclusion that it could only be possible if she found a prince

(what she didn't know was that fantasies lead to presumptions which lead to clouded conversations)

and maya always felt at home with her, and that's all maya wanted,

to belong, belong, belong

maya hart was twelve when she realized that her best friend liked the boy from texas

(or whatever liking someone when you're twelve means)

and it wasn't some epiphany, no, which would have been better than the long long long chain of events (it wasn't that long, it took place over a span of a month, maya just likes to overreact)

but it was the longing in riley's eyes, and it was the jealousy in her words when maya called lucas "sundance", and it was the way she talked about him

god, she talked about him day and night

and she said that he was perfect and everything she had dreamed of

so maya smiled and nodded and found herself caught up in the messy, messy, messy relationship that was them

and between consoling riley about lucas not bringing her flowers, and listening to the rants when lucas would ask why he should bring her flowers, she somehow managed to find time to fall deeply in like with the huckleberry

and it wasn't some epiphany, no, which would've been better than what maya likes to think was the short span of time that was them (it was long, long, long, over 4 years long)

maya hart was 16 years old when she saw the boredom in lucas' eyes and the unwillingness in riley's eyes,

and it was an epiphany (at least to her) when she realized that she was at the last step of the downhill spiral that was their relationship

and so it didn't shock her when riley came to her crying

and it didn't shock her when lucas appeared at her doorstep

and it didn't shock her when she started to fall deeply (even more than the last time) in love with the boy from texas

maya hart was eighteen when she saw herself

the girl with the little less guarded eyes and the little more brighter smile

next to the boy with eyes like the sky and his heart on his sleeve, not to mention that he had a passion for kissing pretty blonde girls (maya hart included)

and through ages twelve to eighteen, maya hart found herself

though the texas drawls, the salty tears, and the stinging goodbyes

and that was maya hart needed.
