Sophie sat up against the headboard while reading her book. Howl had been sitting alongside her, reading the new spellbook that he had just received from a witch living in a nearby valley. He had gone to take a bath. After all, he had done multiple errands that day. Just as Sophie was about to fall asleep, she heard Howl yell from the bathroom. "Soooophiiiiie!" Her eyes shot open.
He barged into the room with nothing but a towel on. The towel was as short as his hair, barely covering him. He was fuming, "Sophie, how many times do I have to tell you to not mix around my potions?! You've mixed it all up! Thankfully, I realized before I used any of it! If I say don't touch it, then don't touch it!"
Sophie sat up and looked down, "I-I'm sorry, Howl. I... I'm not used to leaving the bathroom alone yet... I'm sorry.. I won't do it again." Without looking him in the eyes once, she went under the covers and turned the opposite way from his direction. "Enjoy your bath, Howl. Goodnight."
He left the room and slammed the bathroom door. Sophie laid quietly with her head under the covers. She heard someone come into their room. The person knocked twice, "I'm sorry for coming into your room while you are trying to sleep, Sophie, but I wanted to come check with you... Are you alright?" It was Markl.
"Yes, I'm fine, Markl. Thank you very much. I'm very tired so I would like to sleep. Goodnight, and thank you again."
Markl stood at the door, "Very well. Goodnight, Sophie. Sleep well, and don't let what Howl said make you feel too bad. He overreacts at the smallest things." With that, he left and closed the door.
Sophie let out a sigh. I know that Howl overreacted but it's still my fault. He already told me not to touch his potions. Sigh. Slowly, she dozed off to sleep. About an hour later, Howl walked into the room, with his head hanging. He threw his towel into the corner and sat on the bed. He looked over at Sophie who, he knew, was a very light sleeper. He laid down and turned towards her.
With a flick of his finger, the lights turned off. Howl let out a sigh and moved right behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist and buried his face into her back. "I'm sorry, Sophie. I.. I didn't mean what I said earlier. I was just stressed from everything that went on today. I got angry at you for no reason, really. I don't mind it that much when you rearrange my potions. I'm just being lazy. I'm sorry, so don't be sad. It's not your fault, Sophie."
Sophie was awake, of course, and she knew that he knew she was. She slowly turned towards him and cupped his face. "It's alright, Howl. I understand." She smiled and kissed his forehead. It seemed like all of his stress had melted away. He knew that she was the only person who could relax him like this. Her silver hair glistened in the moonlight coming in from the window.
"Sophie, your hair is like starlight." His eyes seemed to be glowing as his gaze fell upon Sophie's face. "I'm sorry about what happened earlier. I'm so childish."
"There's nothing wrong with being a little childish, honey. Now, let's go to sleep, shall we?" Howl smile and nodded. They shifted around a little, and with this, they fell asleep in each other's arms.
