She was the daughter of a family that ran a Shinto shrine. And she hated wearing priestess' clothes.

I first met her when I was ten years old, when my family moved yet again and took me to visit the Higurashi's shrine. It was fairly crowded that day, and I found the activities within the Shrine utterly and completely dull. As soon as my mother wasn't looking, I fled from the stifling flocks of people and ran off to explore the other regions of the Shrine.

That was how I met her, almost walked right into her as she sat silently on the top staircase that lead towards a hut, staring vaguely out into the distance while petting a rather fat cat. Her dark, somewhat wavy locks fell in front of her face, bangs concealing her eyes. With one glance, I could tell, young as I was, that she was, definitely, waiting for someone.

I remember her turning towards me, and I saw her face for the first time, a mask hiding her thoughts with that light smile of hers. She gestured towards the space on the staircase next to her, and commented with a somewhat amused tone, "Tired of the crowd?"

I shrugged in response and gladly took sat down on the staircase, completely worn out from all the walking I did. Sneaking a side glance towards her, I noted from her uniform that she was probably in high school. Yet, she somehow appeared a lot older than that, the way her eyes darkened and her face solemn, like she had seen a lot (too much) and was tired of it all… The kind of look my grandmother would get as she stared off in the middle of a conversation, eyes seeing something no one else could see…

"What are you waiting for, Nee-san?" I asked absently, words forming out before I myself even realized it.

She started at my question, so much so that the cat leapt out of her lap in fright and ran off. Looking at me in the eye, she asked, almost defensively, "Does it look like I'm waiting for someone?"

I nodded. It was so obvious to me, that it could have been written in neon letters and flashing directly into my eyes.

Sighing at my response, she let out, "I don't know… I guess, I'm waiting for a silver-haired jerk to come get me, I suppose."

Before I could ask her about what she meant, I heard my mother's voice from behind calling out, "Takenaga! I've looked all over for you!!"

My mother rushed up to me, her usually stoic face ruined to reveal a distraught and frantic expression. Hugging me tightly, she made apologizes to the Higurashis for all the trouble and whatever common courtesy was demanded of her at the moment.

My mother took me away before I could say a word.
