*Chapter 1*
My day took a turn for the worst when I picked up the phone with Annabeth on the other line.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Percy?" she choked.
"Annabeth? Annabeth, what's wrong?" I said. It sounded like she'd been crying.
"Percy . . . there's something that I have to tell you."
"What is it?"
"I-I know you're not going to take this very well, but . . ."
"Annabeth, what's the matter?"
"Well, my dad got this great job offer, but . . ." she trailed off.
"What's going on, Annabeth? Your dad got this great job offer. So why do you sound so upset?"
"Percy, I don't want to just abandon my dad . . ."
"Annabeth, just tell me already!"
"My dad got a job in Tokyo."
I paused for a minute, trying to register what she said. "Tokyo, as in . . . Tokyo? Like, Japan, Tokyo?"
"Yes, Seaweed Brain. Tokyo, Japan."
"Oh. So . . . you're going with him?"
"Percy, I have to. He's my dad. And . . . he can't just leave me here in New York while he travels half way around the world. I don't know when I would get to see him again."
"He could come visit," I suggested hopefully.
"Percy! No he can not. He can't afford to come see me every time I say I miss him. I'm sorry, but . . . I have to go with him."
"But, Annabeth . . . what about us? I mean . . . I love you."
"I-I know, Seaweed Brain. I love you too. But I have no choice. My dad won't let me stay here if he's so far away."
"But Annabeth-"
"No Percy. I'm sorry . . . but this is good-bye."
"Annabeth . . ."
"Tell Chiron and the other campers that I'll miss them."
"Annabeth-" I choke.
She hung up.
I stared at the dead phone in my hands, my whole world crashing down. I had just lost the one thing that had kept me mortal. I streched my fingers and touched the small of my back.
"Percy?" mom called, coming into the kitchen. "Oh, honey, what's wrong?" she asked, seeing the phone in my hand and my fingers on my back.
"Annabeth's leaving," I whispered.
"Leaving? But where is she going?"
"To-to Tokyo. Japan. Her dad got a job there, so she has to go with him."
"Oh, Percy, I'm so sorry!" she said, hugging me tightly, smothering me.
"Mom!"
She let me go. "I'm sorry, Percy. I know you two just began dating."
"Yeah, I know. It stinks. But . . ."
"But what, sweetie?"
"But I wonder when I'll see her again. Because I'll never forget her."
