Assassination
Third Person POV
Katniss and Peeta sat on the dewy grass in the meadow, hand in hand, watching their kids play around in the long grass. The summer breeze skated across the meadow, brushing over the family.
"Don't wander too far, kids!" Orders the neurotic mother, as she watches over them like a hawk.
Peeta squeezes her hand and whispers to her reassuringly, "Calm down Katniss. They will be okay."
The giggling children run around in the green, oblivious to their mother's concerns. Having fun is the only thing on their minds.
Bushes on the edge of the meadow rustle, but the parents pay no attention to it. A figure cloaked in black pushes their face through the spiky branches and smooth leaves and looks over at the family. They smirk.
The tip of a sniper emerges out of the plants, aimed at the head of the person who changed the system. They apply their eye against the scope and position the crosshairs against the targets forehead.
Breath in. Breath out.
Bang! The sound of the gun echoes across the meadow. The breeze settles, the children hold still, the birds flee the dense scrubland.
A man screams.
The children run back to where their parents were, to find their fathers crying figure, desperately clutching their mothers still body as if it will bring her back from the dead. Blood drips down her forehead, staining her navy jeans. Her lifeless, grey eyes stare up at the blue sky.
The kids cry beside their dad.
The figure in the bushes smirks to himself and whispers, "That, was for my mother Katniss Everdeen." He slowly retreats away, careful to make no noise and runs like no tomorrow.
The Girl on Fire was dead.
The Districts of Panem wept together at the loss of a brave, selfless human.
Peeta Mellark wept at the loss of a fabulous friend and wife.
Willow and Reuben Everdeen-Mellark wept at the loss of a kind, lovely mother.
Linebreak
Five days later, the funeral for Katniss Everdeen commenced. Those who could come did. Those who couldn't make it watched it live over their TV.
Three days after that Madden Coin, son of President Alma Coin, admitted to assassinating Katniss. He stated that he would freely be incarcerated, appreciating that his mother would now be content.
He was convicted for life.
But that didn't matter to Willow and Reuben. They had been scarred. They never dared step into the tainted meadow that was filled with unwanted memories of the passing of their beloved mother.
