THE REASON

He was not a perfect person. Oh no. The first of all imperfections was the family he was born into. His family thought thriving in the Dark Arts was a noble act. They thought it was a privilege. But he knew better. Still, they were his family. True, he was sorted into Gryffindor and not Slytherin. But so what? He was still capable of betraying the people he loved. He had betrayed one of the most important people in his life.

He had thought it was just a prank he was pulling on the slime ball Snape. He deserved it. The git thought he could poke his nose into their business and that they would just let him. He wanted to know so badly what Remus' secret was, Sirius decided to help him out. He had told him how to get past the Willow. It had completely slipped his mind what would happen to Remus.

Remus refused to talk to him, refused to acknowledge his existence. He had tried. He tried explaining that he didn't think it through. He wanted Remus to know how sorry he was. And Sirius Black was never sorry about anything. This however, he was sorry about.

Every time Remus turned away from him was like a knife to his heart. Every time he thought about how Remus would have felt had he done something to Snape, every time he thought about how Remus felt, knowing that one of his best friends had betrayed him, caused him more pain than was imaginable.

He wished he could take away Remus' pain. The pain that he had put him through, the pain that was there solely because of him. He wanted to be there for Remus again. He wanted to be the friend that he once was.

Yes, he had found a reason to change. It was Remus. It was his Moony. He knew that there was nothing he could do to change what he did. But he did know that he could change himself. He could stop being so reckless. He could stop and think about what he was doing.

"Moony," he said after finally cornering the tired Marauder. "I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking."

Remus sighed; he did that a lot when it came to Sirius. "You never think Sirius."

"True, but I can change. Moony, I swear I can." Sirius loathed begging. But for Remus, he would do anything.

"I don't believe that. You don't think about anyone but yourself. Everything is always about you." Remus tried slipping past Sirius, but Sirius grabbed his arm.

"Maybe I never felt the need to change." He said. "Maybe I never had a reason to."

"And you never will."

Sirius lowered his eyes. He had a reason to change. He may not have realized it before; he may not have bothered trying. But he knew now what was important. He was finally getting it. It wasn't like he didn't have a good side. He did. He had a thoughtful side; he had a side that was normal. He just always chose to ignore it.

"It's you Moony," he said softly. "The reason is you."
