I own nothing but the story line. Enjoy!
The sun has barely began to rise as Jemma Simmons tentatively walked out of her room and over to a couch, leaning her head into her hands and combing through her hair. Dry tears stuck to her face, she shook violently for a few moments before settling down into the soft cushion and rubbing her eyes with the palm of her hands. She takes a few deep breaths and tries to forget the dream.
Simmons' nightmares had not gotten this bad in a long time. She remembered sitting alone at night, crying herself back to sleep after seeing her parents die again and again in her dreams. After being on the BUS, flying so high in the air,the only way out to fall, the nightmares had found their way back to her head at night. She had told no one that every day break, the dreams tore her out of sleep and awoken her in tears and sweat.
"Simmons?" A quiet voice in the dark calls out. Simmons hiccups and begins wiping her face of the tears. "Why are you crying?"
"I'm not crying." Putting on a exhausted face, she turns to see Fitz standing in his room doorway, worry etched on his face.
Simmons takes in his appearance and lets a small smile grace her face. He is slouched into the doorframe, wearing Thor flannel pants and a SHIELD shirt. His short curled hair is mussed up and his blue eyes are heavy. Fitz' bare feet hop up and down every once in a while, no doubt from the cool steel ground. His arms wrap around himself, most likely from the loss of the heat from his bed.
"I am almost one hundred percent sure that those were tears. And you of all people should know I'm not usually wrong." Fitz walks over and sits down next to her, taking in her body heat before reaching over to grab a blanket. "How can you possibly sit here without a blanket? Its much too cold out here for that."
Instead of setting the blanket over himself, although he shivers a few times, Fitz sets the blanket around Simmons' shoulders and settles back into the couch, looking for a little warmth himself. Simmons mutters a thank you without glancing at him.
"Now would you tell me whats wrong?" He searches her face for any sign of distress or pain, but Simmons turns away from him with a wince.
"It was nothing." Fitz scoffs and pushes his shoulder against hers. "I'll just go back to bed."
After waiting a few moments, Jemma stands up and walks to her room once again, stepping back into the only place on the BUS that was able to make her shiver and take a step away.
"Jem?" Fitz calls out, and Simmons looks back, glad for the extra moments she doesnt have to sit alone in her room.
"My room-well I'm right next to you...you know...if-you uh, you need anything."
Jemma turns back around with a small smile, knowing Leo never falters in a sentence, only when he is embarrassed or overwhelmed.
"I'll make sure to remember that." Jemma closes her door with a soft click, lying in bed once again, not falling back to sleep, yet thinking of her partner lying in bed a few feet away for the rest of the early morning.
