He was going to chicken out.
He was going to chicken out.

There was no way this small boy could have the guts to pull the trigger of that gun. I could see it in his big, dark, amethyst eyes. He was struggling. He was thinking about his life, and weighing the options. I used to have a hard time, as well, in the beginning. But now I am experienced.

This boy was not.
He knew it.
I knew it.

He was going to chicken out.

But…what kind of person would I be if I didn't give the little one some advice?
"Say a prayer for yourself," I say. "Close your eyes; sometimes it helps."

There. But I knew he wasn't going to do it.

The little one looks petrified as he looks at the gun, and I can't help but feel the twinge of regret. What kind of monster was I to subject such a small, kind, beautiful boy to such a game? I know he'll chicken out, but…what possessed me to even think about this in the first place?!

Money truly is the root of all evil.

I watch him closely.
Drop the gun, drop the gun. Don't ruin your pretty face.
I know you're going to. You know you want to.

The little one is terrified! I see his eyes go unfocused, and then focus again. He looked so scared, I wanted to go over and hug him—and I don't hug people. It was against my nature.

But why isn't he dropping the gun and walking away?
Why isn't he dropping the gun, and walking away?!

I see the decision in his eyes, and my heart clenches.

Oh, no…

I see his hand tighten, and my breath hitches.

Oh, no, no, no!!

I close my eyes and the loud bang that I've gotten so used to fills the room. It makes me flinch. It's followed by a clatter of metal hitting the floor, and the thud of something heavy falling down.

And it is silent. So, so silent. My ears are still ringing from the loud bang.

I felt a hot tear cascade down my face.
My little one had guts after all.
