A/N: This is just a short ficlet I wrote while I was at work. I was feeling in an Ocarina of Time mood, and I always thought that Link and Saria's friendship was cute and kinda sad at the same time. Anyways, enjoy and feel free to review!!

FRIENDS

"Link?"

The young, blonde Kokiri boy looked up from what he was doing at the sound of his name. Saria sat next to him, arms propped on her folded knees as she gazed at the boundless blue sky above them, the clouds reflected in her bright, emerald eyes. His eyebrows creased in question, but he said nothing, waiting for her to continue.

"You'll be leaving soon." She stated it as fact, and she let out a sigh. "I kept hoping I was wrong, but..." She paused, cocking her head as though listening. "I've felt it. I just know..."

Link studied her for a moment, considering this, then nodded, returning his attention to the chunk of wood he had been whittling away at, slowly transforming it into the shape of a horse. Saria's words unsettled him, but didn't completely surprise him. She knew things, things no other Kokiri did, and he wasn't one to question her; not because he was a boy of very few words, but because she was always right.

And the truth was, Link, himself, had been feeling an indescribable pull. A restless yearning he couldn't explain.

The thought of leaving the village terrified him, but at the same time, he couldn't help wondering what it would be like outside of his forest home.

"Link? You have to promise me something."

He glanced at her again, and their eyes met and held. He waited.

"You have to promise that we'll always be friends."

He blinked, taken aback by her request. It was a given, he knew that. Saria had been one of the very few who had been kind to him and accepted the young Boy Without a Fairy without being judgmental. Even when others in the village shunned and bullied him.

That, alone, was grounds enough for his promise.

She took his hand in hers, their fingers twining around the small, unfinished horse, and they both turned their gazes skyward.

It was easy for him to agree, no matter what their futures might hold.

He nodded, wordlessly.

*End*

A/N: Since Link never talked in the game, I couldn't bring myself to make him talk in this either. Please forgive any grammar/spelling mistakes.
