Chapter one.
Her eyes scanned the tree-line watching for any incoming creatures. It had been 4 months since the unfortunate loss of her companion, a long cold winter had made food scarce and living conditions unbearable. Sitting on top of the snowy covered roof, finally peached in a chair after several failed attempts. It was peaceful, a rare commodity in these times. She knew it wouldn't last, the creatures made sure of that. They always waited until you were lulled into a sense of false security and then they would strike. Teeth bared and hands out stretched waiting for your soul to fade away just like theirs had once ago. Many months ago she believed that inside these creatures there was a smidgen of their past self. But as time past and as more and more creatures tried to wipe her out of humanity, she realized that there was nothing left. No former self, no hope that they could ever come back from that. They were doomed to an eternity of suffering inside a monsters body and if she didn't stop feeling sorry for herself, she would end up like that too.
Startled by a noise, forgetting everything that was previously on her mind she picked up her binoculars and scanned the surrounding area. One creature emerged from the tree-line, followed by another, and another until there was about 20 of them sniffing the air, smelling her, wanting a meal. She knew this would happen, think things are safe and then shit hits the fan. Grabbing her meagre belongings she did the only thing she knew how. Ran.
