Chapter 1: Jane POV

In my many, many years of life, we, The Volturi, had never come across beings oh so — fascinating. October 31st marks the day we discovered the existence of these so-called, recombinant DNA life forms- all varying percentages of, well — bird…

It would be much easier for me to just explain..

According to Alec, I was "moping", "as per usual". Apparently he didn't take the recent undermining of the Volturi's power by that stupid hu-

Ugh, whatever, I was contemplating the Cullen's human issue and how to make sure they wouldn't ever cross again, when the newest batch of livestock entered the room- their voices gratingly annoying and high pitched hurting my rather 'delicate' ears. My attention was slowly drifting as the newer guards whispered in excitement about what was probably going to be their first time participating in the old routine; invite, charm, drain, and dispose— until a particular group of tourists walked in; a group of six kids and a dog.

Normally, I would't be interested, but there was something off about their scent, which closely resembled the characteristics of a bird's- crisp, fresh air, wildness, and the cloying scent of hospitals. As I glanced over at Alec questioningly, I was momentarily taken off guard by the intensity on his face- directed solely at the youngest girl of the group, a young looking blonde, who I could immediately pick out as his la tua cantante, his bloodsinger.

The cherub-like girl gasped, before tugging on the sleeve of an older, tanned blonde, whose gaze had already been narrowed at us- rather passionate in its' judging stare. The youngest was whispering something which, suspiciously and frustratingly enough, even we could not her with our advanced senses.

The older girl perked to attention, then she tapped the back of an emo boy's hand 2 times and he passed it along the group; a teenage african american, a frighteningly pale strawberry blonds, and a young blonde who could pass as the youngest girl's twin, until they were all alert of us, very cautious, mostly looking at Alec and I.

It had seemed that the group caught all of our attentions as well, Aro sent the entire group to a back chamber for "an exclusive exploration" with the newer recruits while the main guard remained.

As soon as the group tried to follow the other normal tourists out the room Demetri blocked the path of the eldest girl- hissing in her face threateningly.

What happened next, even to me, was somewhat terrifying; the girl did not flinch, instead she roundhouse kicked Demetri into the unforgiving stone wall of our castle, with no delay between the two events. The wall cracked, and in some places threatened to crumble, and as her angry gaze, as though she was a mother bear, swept over all of us, I cowered back somewhat in my mind..

What was wrong with me?! Why was I scared of this human?

Though I was semi-paralyzed in shock, Alec could no longer resist his bloodlust, rushing in vampiric speed at the youngest girl as I gasped, "Alec! N-" at the same time the eldest blonde began, "Angel!"

Before I could finish my thought, the freaking, what seemed to be, 13-year old, calmly raised her hand and commanded, "Stop."

I almost scoffed in derision at the girl's futile attempts to save her own life compared to her companion's, until I noticed that Alec- the one piece of family I had left in this life, had stopped. A dreamy look of zero-concern reassured me that he was dead, but I mentally raged— no one was allowed to play mind games with my family except my family! I soon noticed that a lot of the rest of the main guard that went to attack had frozen as well… How had she done it!

"Easy" she said turning me," I can read and control minds" she said in an angelic tone. "Oh," I semi-squeaked out. Wait WHAT! Me, Jane the powerful squeaking to a little girl!

"I will release them once you swear to not attack my family while we are here, and Jane, don't be ashamed— you should be afraid" she said turning to smile hauntingly at me. "Of course my dearest cherub" Aro swore silkily, "I am sever so sorry for the uncontrolled, and unprecedented actions of my guard; I will not attack your –err- family " he finished. Then, a bright light appeared and a..
