"Do you believe in other lives, Marita?"
She chuckles seductively, stretching languidly under his intent gaze. Alex absently traces the moonlight staining her slender frame.
"No," her small breasts rise as his hand roughly slides between her thighs.
Her hand reaches timidly for his, and he sees the betrayal naked in her blue eyes. He feels it hanging in the air; lurid like the perfume of dying flowers.
In an awkward moment of tenderness, he pulls her to him – their foreheads touching. When she begins to speak, he feels the vibrations.
"I'd like to believe," she falters, "that there's a place beyond all this. One where..." her voice breaks, and Alex quiets her with a kiss, which she hungrily devours.
Tangled in Marita's thin arms, Alex can practically feel the day that they met – the mischeviousness in her smile and the hope in the New York sunset.
And now her bright eyes are tainted by a growing darkness and the sun rises over a broken skyline. Printing his lips onto her eyelids, he whispers, "I love you, beyond anything."
