Okay, so in "Shattered Crystal", Sonic doesn't know who Lyric the Last Ancient is even though they've met before as said in "Rise of Lyric". This fic shows what I think happened that made Sonic forget who Lyric was.

Sure, I may get something wrong, but this is just a what-if scenario.

(Bygone Island)

Sonic took a stroll near a random beach. The birds were singing, the sun was shining, Eggman was nowhere to be seen, it looked like it was going to be a normal day, and not a boring one like usual.

Then suddenly, ENERGY BALL!

Luckily, Sonic managed to dodge it before it hit him, and just as he got up and dusted himself, Lyric made his appearance. "Lyric, what an unpleasant surprise to see you again." Sonic remarked.

"It's an equal displeasure to see you again, Hedgehog." Lyric answered.

Sonic got ready to attack, but he stopped once he noticed something strange on the reptile. More specifically, the blue button on his chest. "Wait, didn't Knuckles throw that thing on your chest away?"

"Yes, and I simply took it back from that organic known as..." Lyric paused to try and remember Eggman's name, only to fail a few moments later. "Actually, what was his name again?"

"Doctor Egghead?"

"Ah, yes, Doctor Egghead. I took it back from him, and now that I have my button back, I'll begin my search for the Chaos Crystals by making you forget who I am!"

"That makes no sense at all."

"I don't care, I'm an Ancient!"

Lyric tried to smack Sonic with his tail, only for the hedgehog to dodge it with relative ease and perform a spin dash. Sonic jumped and tried to hit Lyric, but he just flew out of the way, chuckling as Sonic stopped just before hitting the ocean.

Sonic jumped and homing attacked Lyric, with the knockback almost sending the reptile to a tree. However, he quickly recovered and shot some energy balls from his hands while shooting a laser from his tail.

Sonic ran after Lyric and dodged both the energy balls and laser before jumping and giving Lyric a smug smirk before kicking him in the face. However, before the reptile recovered, Sonic used the enerbeam to grab Lyric.

Of course, Sonic had a bit of trouble lifting Lyric as first, but he managed to do so just as he noticed, and he threw him to the ocean, where a random whale hit him with it's tail and sent him flying back to the ground as Sonic landed unharmed.

"Is that all you got, Lyric?" Sonic taunted.

"Yes... to distract you, that is." Lyric counter-taunted.

Sonic raised an eyebrow in confusion before Lyric flew to him and hit him with his tail, which sent an electrical current through his body, causing the hedgehog intense pain. Sonic screamed in agony as Lyric laughed louder and louder as he enjoyed his agony.

Once he finished, Sonic wobbled a little before hitting the ground. "There, that electrical charge should block your memory of me. Once it has taken it's effect, you will forget I ever existed." Lyric briefly explained. "Enjoy forgetting me, Sonic the Hedgehog."

The cyborg reptile laughed like a maniac as the hedgehog hit the ground and fell unconscious. After a while, Sonic slowly started to wake up as a childish voice called his name, in fact, the voice sounded like Tails.

"Sonic, wake up!"

Sonic jumped awake and looked around before spotting Tails standing next to him, and no Lyric to be seen.

"Uh, what happened?" Sonic asked.

"I don't know, you were on the ground and I thought you were taking a nap." Tails answered. "But I need you for something, so I needed to wake you up. Come with me."

Tails ran to the forest and Sonic glanced at the beach one more time before following the fox.
