Heart

.

You're looking at him and he's looking at you and suddenly the world doesn't seem as empty. The hope in his eyes fuels you, burns within both your core and his, and so it is almost instinctive that his hand is in yours, his breath is mingling with your own, and your lips are touching, warm flesh to warm flesh. The kiss locks you to him, and for the barest trace of a moment you feel full, happy; you realise what it is you've been missing, and what it is you need. You smile, but that's when it all goes wrong.

He goes slack in your grip, his lips parting from yours as easily as it is to peel the skin from a grape. You look at him, really look at him, searching for the signs of what's wrong, but his eyes are glassy and reflecting the world he can no longer see. You sob, call his name as he crashes to the floor, but his chest has stopped heaving, his limbs have stopped twitching, and when you feel for his heart, this mystery heart he had believed didn't exist - when you feel for its beat, there is nothing there but emptiness, a hollow chasm without a soul, just as he feared before, but this time is different, because then he was alive and watching you with wary eyes, and now he's dead, unmoving, still, and you'll never be able to tell him how you've changed, how you feel…how he made you feel, because he's dead now and he's not coming back, not for you, not for anything. He's dead and it's over now, and all that's left to do is cry.

Author's Note: Okay, so this drabble is based on 1x07, 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter'. I saw the episode last night, and it so moved me that I just had to write something about it. The Sheriff was my favourite character…*tear*. OKAY LET ME GET ONE THING STRAIGHT: please, when you review (and I saw when, not if… :D), please don't include any spoilers for later episodes. Australia (where I live) is really behind on Once Upon a Time, and this episode is as far as we've gotten so far, so please, refrain from giving anything away! Also, for the same reason, I dunno if this is all still canon, but meh…it was fun writing something so depressing! :D
