P.O.V. Caroline
As Geoffrey sat on my bed holding his list and I held mine, I started thinking about our relationship. Tom needs a father and I didn't know when another man may come into my life. If he would. So I swallowed my confusion and doubt. Charlie stood outside my window on a ladder with a can of shaving cream.
"What do you say?" Geoffrey asked. I looked into his eyes and knew he cared for me and I care a lot about him too. I saw Charlie writing on the window, but I ignored him and looked at Geoffrey.
"Geoffrey, the answer is yes."
"Yes?" He hugged my neck and then kissed me. I looked at Charlie and suddenly the ladder fell and he screamed.
"Charlie!" I jumped and rushed over to the window.
"Charlie?" Geoffrey asked and we saw him laying on the ground underneath the ladder. I rushed down the stairs and out the back door, ignoring the fact that I was wearing my nightgown. Behind me were Geoffrey, Mother and Jo.
"Dad!" Jo rushed over to her dad.
"What happened?" Mother asked.
"I don't know. He fell right after Carol said she'd marry me." Geoffrey said and they all looked at me. Mother and I picked up the ladder off of him and leaned it up against the house. Jo helped him up off the ground.
"Are you okay dad?" He shook his head.
"I think I'm okay Joanna."
"Well, should we go out to celebrate?" Geoffrey asked.
"I think it's a great idea," I said, "I'll go get Tom."
"Our own little family," he replied and I smiled. For the first time in years I have a family. I've always had Tom and mother, but we'll finally be complete.
P.O.V. Charlie
I couldn't believe Caroline said yes. She was really going to marry Geoffrey. I was fine from falling off the ladder, but I was pained that she would disregard my feelings. It is her life and she'll do what she feels is right. I watched Caroline, Jo and Geoffrey walk into the house, but Laura grabbed my arm.
"What happened?" She hissed.
"I don't know. I tried to get her to say no." I replied. Laura shook her head.
"I'll never understand what's gotten into her."
"What if she does love him?"
"This isn't about love! It's Caroline." I nodded.
"Maybe she'll break it off before dinner." Laura sighed.
"I don't know. Caroline can be stubborn," she replied, "unless-"
"Unless what Laura?"
"We break them up."
"Laura, we can't do that."
"Watch me." She walked away leaving me standing outside alone.
