The last conversation

"I hear that you're are staying behind." Allan said, taking a seat in the garden of the Bassam's house. Will shifted uncomfortably he had hoped to tell Allan at a more appropriate time. "Don't worry Much told me." he added feeling his friend tense at the words.

"Oh so you're not mad then?" Will asked anxiously, he hoped Allan understood his reasons.

"I don't know mate, I mean it's a big step to take, but you know me, I'll get by." Allan shrugged with a half laugh, he could feel the hurt growing in his chest. "You know I'm going to miss you, you and your dopey face." Will laughed, for the first time in a long while. He was silent, words raced around Will Scarlett's head; there was so much he wanted to say to his best friend. He was scared.

Without Allan there was no one to make him smile, no one to confide in. He was like a brother; yet that did not feel right to him, was there something more than a brother? Well what ever their relationship, it was something he did not want to forget or leave anytime soon.

Allan could see his friend was in deep though, he knew Will as trying to find he right words, the same words he was trying to form to leave his own lips. Over the past year his journey has not been the smoothest, Allan grimaced that the thoughts.

"You know I never meant to hurt anyone, especially you." Allan spoke, breaking the silence. Will looked up meeting his friend's eyes he held them for a long time in his gaze, as if he was searching his soul.

"I know you had little choice, and it did hurt what you did. My only regret is not speaking up more, not defending you." Will replied meaningful. "So what happens now?" he added lightly, trying to brighten the mood.

"I dunno. Oh have you thought anymore about asking Djaq to marry you?" his friend asked, desperate for a change of topic to avoid the despair rising in his stomach.

"No, she wants a Saracen ceremony, I want all my friends to be there, not quite a win win situation." He replied giving a wry smile. "Allan, can you do me a favour when you get back to England?"

"Sure name it mate." Allan was curious, Will never asked for favours.

"Look after Luke, tell him that I'm ok and." Will stopped himself, the thoughts of his brother; of leaving him like this without a word stung. "And that I love him. Can you give him this, its enough to set him up and give him a good start in life. Something our father would have wanted for him." Will handed Allan a leather pouch full of coins, his eyes now firmly fixed on the floor so Allan would not see his tearful eyes.

"Will, I will do this for you, it will be an honour." Allan grasped his friend and pulled him into huge hug, Will clung on to him as though his life depended on it. He pulled back and looked once again into Allan's eyes.

"I love you and thank you." A croaky Will softly said with tears now freely streaming down his cheeks.

"I love you too mate" Allan replied "What am I going to do without you Will Scarlett." He laughed, embracing his best friend for the last time.
