CHAPTER 1
AMU'S P.O.V.
I've been hiding what I am from people for as long as I can remember. Only my grandmother and my siblings know my secret. When I was younger, my older brother Kukai and I were practically raised by our grandma because our parents were always working. My Mom is a writer for Housewitch weekly where as my Dad works as a wild Dragon photographer. So naturally while they were away for sometimes weeks at a time, grandma took care of the two of us. It was when I turned three when I started hiding. While Kukai is a vampire like our Father, and our younger sister Ami is a witch like our Mother, I'm what is known as a cat demon.
Cat demons are an 'extinct' species, known best for the war they started one hundred years ago. It is unclear how exactly it happened, but one thing I know for sure is that nobody wants us around anymore. Only a few, including my grandma - the one I inherited my powers from - survived the war and went into hiding. As far as my parents know, I'm a vampire like my brother and father. Now most vampires do not burst into flames in sunlight...anymore, but there are still a few that get pretty nasty sunburns. That's what everyone knows me as.
After Ami was born when I was five however, Mom and Dad had to start spending more time at home. That's when grandma got me my first cloak. It both hides my ears and tail as well as my scent, as well as trick people into believing my little lie. Not much to do about my eyes or fangs, but that's life. Over the years, grandma taught me all sorts of spells. She was my magic teacher, as well as Kukai and Ami's. But when she passed away three years ago, I was alone.

I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock buzzing loudly, filling the silence that once consumed my bedroom. I pried my eyes open and quickly glanced at the annoying contraption before moving to shut it off. I feel my eyes widening as I look at the time. 7:10 the clock read. 'Shit!' I curse silently to myself, moving to untangle myself from my sheets. 'School starts in twenty minutes!' Quickly jumping out of my bed, I make my way towards my closet to pull out my school uniform. My school's uniform consists of a knee-length red plaid skirt, a white button-down dress shirt, a black blazer with the schools crest on the left breast pocket, and to top it all off, a red tie. Like always, my uniform was personalized with a black studded leather belt, red plaid leg warmers, a red arm band and finally my lock necklace; the one thing I inherited from grandma. As I finish putting my uniform on, I grab my cloak from the back of my desk chair and tie the straps around my neck, pulling the hood so that it securely covering my head. Now fully dressed, I exit my room and head downstairs.
When I reach the bottom of the stairs, I'm met with the smell of my mom's famous chocolate chip pancakes and my dad's famous slightly-burnt bacon. "Mornin' bed-head. Beautiful as ever, I see." My older brother, Kukai sarcastically greets me on this wonderful morning. "Morning Ami, Mom, Dad." I greeted. "You forgot me? Oh! I'm wounded!" exclaimed Kukai, feigning hurt, going so far as to clutch his chest as if he's been physically struck. I make a grab for a piece of toast with strawberry jam on it, before getting up and walking towards my backpack.
"Oh crap!" Kukai exclaimed, more than likely just now realizing what time it is. "Bye, Mom! Bye Pop's!" He scurried over to the door, muttering something to himself, searching for his bike keys, before rushing out the door. "He never learns." I muttered to myself, shaking my head. "You're not exactly one to talk, Onee-Chan!" Spoke Ami, obnoxiously. "Didn't you wake up like, five minutes ago? She asked. "And don't you need a ride to school?" I retorted. "Speaking of which, hey Mom? Can I borrow your broom today?" I asked, using my best 'sickeningly-sweet' voice.
"Well...I don't know, Sweetie..." My Mom; Midori spoke. "Oh come on! I have my flying permit! Please!" I begged. Last week, I got my flying permit so I can take the school's flying Ed practice class at my school, for the sole reason of skipping gym. Despite the fact that Kukai rides his motorcycle everywhere, I choose to ride a broom. At least with a broom, if you crash the worse you'll get is a few bruises and maybe sprain something. "Are you sure Amu? My broom is designed for witches. Not vampires." My mom asked, worried. "It'll be fine! I'll have Ami with me so it should be okay!" I reminded her. I could see her shoulders visibly relax at that. "Well...Okay." She agreed, albeit reluctantly.
"Great!" I say, finishing up the last of my toast before grabbing my backpack. "Ami! Let's go!" I call to her as I grab my mom's broom by the front door and wait for Ami to catch up, just in time to see Kukai pull out of the garage and speeds away on his bike. "Ready!" Ami calls and hops on the back of the broom and we take off towards school.
*X*
We finally land in the school parking lot and Ami immediately gets off the broom and begins to run in the direction of the middle school division. "Horreat!" I chant and watch as the broom shrinks into a small toothpick-size stick. The nice thing about Mom's broom is that, even though she doesn't bother doesn't bother doing it, she can shrink it and hide it in her hair, if she so desired. Tucking the now small object into my backpack, I start walking towards the schools front entrance.
"Hey, Amu-chi! Wait for Yaya!" Shouted a voice from behind. I stopped and turned around to see Yuiki Yaya running towards me, her long auburn pigtails held up by two big red ribbons bouncing as she ran. Yaya is an Elf with boundless energy and an addiction to candy and sweets. "Hi Amu-chi! What's up? Are you excited about flyers-Ed today in gym?! I'm so excited! I can't wait! Well, I mean I can but don't want to! I wish I had a time machine so I could just jump ahead and be in gym already! You know?" told you. She's a hyper one. "Yaya, maybe you should calm down a little?" suggested Kairi, Yaya's boyfriend calmly. Kairi Sanjo is a wizard with some of the highest grades in school. Next to Yaya's, of course, not that you can tell by looking at her.
Seeing as that was the sole reason I studied non-stop last weekend so I could past my flying test and get my learners permit, yes. I'm excited. Today, all second years with a flying permit and a OK from their parents, get to show off what they know about flying a broom so far, only to get criticized and knocked down a peg by Coach Sanjo; A very mean and very bitter old witch - As well as Kairi's older sister. I know the teachers say its flying-Ed, but all coach Sanjo ever really does is criticize us.
"Excited for the class or excited for being yelled at by Coach Sanjo? No offense Kairi, but your sister is the meanest women alive."
"Please don't exaggerate. I understand that my sister may not be the friendliest person in the world," I snorted at that. 'Not the friendliest? Try demon-in-training!' I thought. Kairi sent me a small glare before continuing. "But in her defense, she's never liked kids. She likes me, as I am her only brother and has learned to tolerate the students here. That's as much as she can do. Besides that, she's only a high school gym teacher because her career as a talent manager had failed." He finished lecturing me.
"Yeah, Okay. Anyway, so Yaya? Have you seen Rima today? Or at the very least Nagihiko? Rima still owes me for buying her lunch the other day." Just as I finished my question, that thing the school calls a bell rang, causing anyone on campus to cringe, and anyone who's part animal or has sensitive hearing, to cover their ears for dear live. After if finally stopped, I uncovered my ears (yes, I covered my ears too. It hurt!) And turned to Yaya and Kairi.
"I think I'll head down to class now. Let's hope I see Rima. See you in gym!" I waved to the two as I ran off towards class.
*X*
I managed to reach my potion class just before the late bell rang, successfully avoiding Miharu-Sensei's wrath. She started teaching here at Seiyo Academy when Kukai was a first year. Although probably one of the nicest teachers at the Academy, if your late for class without a good reason or she thinks you're not even trying, her anger can rival that of Coach Sanjo's. "Good morning, Hinamori-san! Cutting it a bit close today, are we? Please go take your seat." Miharu-sensei says in her usual morning-person tone. I walk over to my lab table near the back next to the window and take my seat beside to Rima.
"Alright everyone! Before we start today's lesson, I'd like to introduce you all to our newest student! Tsukiyomi-san? Please stand." The whole class turns to look at a hooded figure, standing up in the seat to my right. His face was covered by a cloak similar to mine, dark strands of midnight blue hair peeking out. "My name is Tsukiyomi Ikuto." He stated simply, sitting back down. "Tsukiyomi-san? Isn't there anything you want to tell the class about yourself? Or perhaps let them ask you some questions-" "No." the new kid, Ikuto, stated before the professor could even finish her question. "A-Alright than…" she trailed off, looking befuddled. "So! Who here can tell me what is needed to conjure a proper sleeping potion? How about you, Tsukiyomi-san?" She asked, looking at him with just the faintest glare on her smiling face. "Do you know the answer?" she challenged him.
"You'll need one poppy flower, one spring g at and one spring Brisbane. You need to boil all of this in one cup of water. Use sparingly." Everyone in the class simply stared at him in awe, amazed how well he knew the mixture. We had just learned how to make that potion last Friday! Was his last school ahead of us or something? "T-That's…correct." Miharu-sensei said, looking slightly deflated.
