It was his tenth day. His tenth day of being an entrepreneur and fulfilling his childhood dreams. He, Jacob Kowalski had successfully started his own business and was quickly turning up a profit. No one knew where his ideas came from, the mythical creatures imaged into the pastries and breads he baked throughout the day. There was a whimsical quality about them, the pastries especially. Sometimes, he could swear the pastries would move on their own, flying into and out of their display cases. Those occurrences always left him feeling a bit.. Weird. Those types of magical, nonsensical things did not happen to plain old Mr. Kowalski.
His employees dubbed him as insane, or say that he was working too hard. Those rare instances always gave him some food for thought.
'No one would believe me,' he thought sardonically, "What sane human being believes in this kind of stuff?"
He was broken from this reverie by the door, its loud ringing announcing the arrival of a customer. He hurriedly cleaned the area around the register, before peering around the glass showcase to get a look at who had come through the door. He saw a lady, her bright blonde locks offset by the silken pink coat she wore. From his vantage point, he judged her to be a pretty sort of woman, unlike his usual clientele.
"What can I do for you, Miss?"
"Oh! Please call me Queenie! You know, I've heard so much about this adorable little place! I just had to come see for myself. Your pastries are very beautiful, wherever did you get the idea for them? "
He gave a short laugh. "I honestly don't know. I suppose it all started with this dream. You see, I was on this grand adventure, meeting all sorts of people and strange creatures. I had these dreams for weeks! All those.. those creatures! They talked to me, and the dreams inspired me to make these. " He gestured around the shop. "Let me tell you, it was like magic. Absolute wonder. But maybe it's just me." He noted that with no little pleasure that the pretty woman had a small grimace on her face through his story. He watched, fascinated, as she then quirked her nose and beamed up at him once more.
"And you remember all that! Why, I wish I had that kind of imagination! It sounds so magical. It's obviously paid off"
"Yeah" His tongue began to grow heavy, his words not coming as he found less interesting topics to talk about. He wanted, for some unknown reason, to keep talking to this woman. She was captivating, not only in beauty, but she had an aura about her that was in both ways charming and alluring. She was a mystery, and he wanted to know more about her. Hell, what have I got to lose?
He cleared his throat. "Hey, you wanna go out for a coffee sometime?"
She regarded him coquettishly, and finally replied yes with a small inclination of her head. She exited the store, then, leaving him to finally calm down the butterflies in his stomach.
They would see each other tomorrow.
