Different
"My daddy didn't like me."
"He didn't understand you. You're different."
Samara looked at the man sitting next to her. He looked strange, but she could tell he was still a man. He had taken her from the well.
"I know what it's like to be different."
Samara looked down at the floor.
"Did your Daddy know you were different?"
"I don't know. I never knew him. My mother knows."
"My mommy knew. She didn't understand either."
"Is that why she...?"
"She said I was all she ever wanted. Then she closed the well."
The man put his arm around her. She didn't pull away.
"My mother abandoned me too. I was a baby, so I don't remember."
Samara, yawning, pulled the covers close.
"I'm tired."
"Then go to sleep. It's been a long day."
Samara lay down.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For saving me."
"You're welcome."
As Samara fell asleep, the man smiled at her. She had been through so much, but now she was safe. And she was with others like her.
"Gute nacht, Samara."
Thinking about the girl he'd saved, Kurt fell asleep.
