A/N: Please note that I was reading about things like this in middle school. I did reports on it. In much more graphic detail than I have here. I acknowledge that I may not be the best judge when it comes to rating the subject matter. If you think it needs to be rerated please tell me.
I lay curled around my clutch. They wouldn't get them. They would try, just like I've seen them do to other nesting mothers. I wouldn't let them.
"Careful not to break the eggs. "
So many dead. So many slaughtered defending their clutch.
They would not take my eggs.
"Try not to damage the hide, less money that way."
I inhale, and let loose a great rush of fire. They leap back and I feel harsh, stinging , pinpricks on my scales. I look to the side, glaring as I let loose another burst of flames as the human wizard.
"Steady now, don't do too much damage to the liver!"
I feel something strike me under my jaw, where my throat meets my head. I jerk even as I feel blood begin to trickle from the wound and I begin to choke.
I'm drowning in it! I'm drowning in my own blood!
A sword, metal and stained with blood old and new, clatters to the floor. I let loose another rush of fire. It falls short of my aim, pouring out of the hole in my neck.
"Don't damage the heart. We need the heart strings. "
Another blow strikes me on the side and I jerk. My vision blackens at the edges, inky blackness seeping through.
I can't breathe! I can't breathe but I can't let them get my clutch! I can't!
I fall.
They can not have my children!
My vision is black.
I feel another blade strike me on the back of my head. My magic fails. I can no longer flame.
I feel a sharp, agonizing, pain in my spine.
Everything Stops.
A/N: This is based off of real life practices when it comes to factory farming. Even Kosher farms are often inhumane to the point of letting livestock drown on their own blood- sometimes while upside down.
For cows to produce milk they have to have a calf. The calfs are usually either killed outright( and thats if they are lucky) or thrown away and left to starve to death. Even egg farming is cruel. Chick farms, which basically produces baby chickens, will treat chicks roughly. They use conveyor belts and will basically toss the chicks around. If the chicks are injured they get killed.
And that's just what we know about. Its illegal for animal welfare groups to have members infiltrate these places in most areas. So the few video's you do see of it can and do end up with the kind semariten being jailed.
Not everything is being reported.
If you can shop at local farms for livestock. Chances are the animals are more humanely treated, are healthier, and it helps your local economy. If farmer Bob down the road is selling fresh eggs buy them from him if you can. (And as some one who has owned chickens before it is of my opinion that happy, healthy, chickens produce better tasting eggs.)
People with limited resources have to use every part of an animal to sell that's sellable. Factory farms don't.
Wizards use Dragon Hide for gloves, the liver for potions, and the heart strings for wands. Dragons are pretty rare, so I'd wager when they kill a dragon to harvest from it they have to be quick because of how dangerous it is and they also have to do it cleanly so the dragon doesn't damage the product.
They probably do go after nesting females- they can manage the eggs just fine on their own, and the females won't run like males would. They have to fight to protect their young so the wizards basically have a sitting duck to handle.
