extemporaneous \ek-stem-puh-RAY-nee-us\, adjective:
1. Composed, performed, or uttered on the spur of the moment, or without previous study; unpremeditated; impromptu.
2. Prepared beforehand but delivered without notes or text.
3. Skilled at or given to extemporaneous speech.
4. Provided, made, or put to use as an expedient; makeshift.
L didn't think about it before he actually made the speech, because he was a genius and geniuses simply don't think about those sorts of things. Unless, of course, you were a genius like Raito, but then again Raito was a genius who strived for perfection- (which was foolish, L always thought- Raito could probably come to school dressed in his pajamas and still command respect.)
He still felt nervous, though, when standing up to make the college speech, but he figured it had nothing to do with the crowd. (After all, it's not that easy to feel stupid in front of people you were far superior to intellectually.)
He figured it probably had to do with the fact that the man (or boy, really.) standing next to him was probably Kira. And that he was a mass murderer on an international scale.
(And in a moment of pure denial, that it had nothing to do with the fact that Raito had eyes that were the most entrancing shade of brown he had ever seen.)
