I don't own Bleach.

The loud, insistent ring of his telephone breaks his train of thought.

His left cheek is pressed into his pillow, his glasses lay ignored on his bedside cabinet and his lanky frame is covered by a blanket. Now, while this usually gave someone the impression that aforementioned person was asleep, Ishida Uryuu had been awake for ages, trying to fall sleep and failing miserably. It's been a long, tiring day for him - what with Kurosaki being annoying and seeing Orihime virtually glued all the freaking time to him and then bumping into his father on his way back home.

He's heard - after several thousand rumours and Rukia's excited squealing - that Kurosaki and Orihime are offically a couple; not that he pays attention to rumours, no, he has much better things to do with his time, but when these rumours are regarding Inoue-san...well, it can't hurt to say he overheard, right? Of course, he's happy for them, he's not that kind of a monster. But some part of him is screaming in rage right now - he should have asked Inoue out earlier, he should have told her how he felt earlier, he should have made her his earlier. He's not jealous; of course not, not him. But you and Inoue-san would look better together than Kurosaki and Inoue-san, right?

The telephone continues to ring and with a loud groan, Ishida lifts the receiver. A quiet 'hello' comes through and he recognises the voice instantly.

It's hers.

"Ne, I-Ishida-kun..."

"He's not available right now," Ishida stings. "maybe if you called at an hour when creatures other than nocturnal animals are awake, you would be able to reach him."

Now he's just being irrational, trying to snap at her to relieve his anger. As if it's some sort of salve to his wounds.

"I-I...I just wanted to say thank you..." she sounds bolder now, more like the Orihime he knows and wants. He's about to ask what for, but her voice cuts him off. "...because, if it wasn't for you, I...Kurosaki-kun and I wouldn't be together now...so...so - "

He hangs up abruptly, not wanting to hear the rest of the sentence. It's just every moment that he wants to tell her how much he loves her and she's moving so, so far away from him now and he can't help but feel angry. He knows it's not her fault - she can't help the way she feels, but he's loved her for so long and now she's slipped out of his reach. It's always Kurosaki-kun this or Kurosaki-kun that to her - don't mistake him, he's not jealous. But...she should have been his. And the sad part is he's twenty-one, he's loved her since high school and he's kept himself shut for four years.

Ishida Uryuu really hates the phone.

And that's wehere it ends. Whaddaya think?
