New Life
Eowyns grey eyes wandered from her hands in her lap to the outside of the carriage, she sat up straight as a lady of her standing should despite being only seven years old. Her brother sat next to her silent and unwavering, both were heading to their Uncle King Theoden's great Golden Hall Meduseld to live. Eowyn tried hard not to cry for her mother and father she had loved so dearly; her father had allowed her archery lessons and sword play, her mother taught her to be graceful and proud. She resisted the urge to play with her long pale golden hair, had she done so her tutor would have scolded her, Not how a Lady of House Eorl should behave. She stared out of the window of the carriage again as they approached Edoras, she calmed the butterflies in her stomach and mimicked her brothers steadfast strength he seemed to be exuding. He gently squeezed her hand reassuringly without looking at her, Eowyn smiled and squeezed back.
The carriage went up the incline of the new lands they would be living in and the small girl wanted a good look at the impressive hall. She peeked out and let a few strands of her hair fall out, When they call this a Great Hall they are not joking. She feels her tutor's hand on her arm pulling her in, "Do stop child we do not want you falling out and messing up your clothes and hair." Eowyn sat neatly as she was told but stared at the horsemen riding in with their impressive armour, swords, and bows. They looked strong and gallant to the small Lady and she could not help but think, I wish to wield one of those and shoot arrows again. She loved the feel of the arrows as they were loosed from her bow and the sound they made when they hit the hay targets. She could practice her archery all day if she didn't have to worry about silly etiquette lessons on how to be a lady of the court.
The carriage door opening brought her back to present and she accepted the hand of the Knight who offered, she stepped out and was careful with her fine blue cloak and underneath a green and gold trimmed dress. Her hair fell about her shoulders and her grey eyes were warm and playful when she spotted her cousin Theodred standing there in his armour ready to greet her, "Cousins, welcome to Edoras. I trust your trip was swift and without trouble?"
"It was rather dull to be honest, too quiet" Eomer spoke for the first time since he entered the carriage. He grinned at the young man who chuckled, "Well as you have an adult minder with you it is no wonder."
Eowyn stifled her laughter and nodded in her agreement, she was sure there would have been more conversations had Lady Aeofwyn not been present. She curtiesed as was protocol to the Heir to the throne and would do so again when she saw her uncle arrive, he wore the colours of House Eorl and looked strong and commanding. He wore a kindly expression when his eyes fell upon his sisters children. "Yes, I welcome you to your new home I am sorry for your loss, your mother was a beautiful and kind woman." he placed a hand on Eomer's shoulder and another to Eowyn's face, "Come I will personally show you to your rooms, then you must come to the hall I am positive you both are hungry"
Both children give respectful bows of their heads and follow with straight backs and eyes forward as they had both been taught. Knights walk at their side as they enter the Golden Hall with the horses carved into the wood, it was indeed an impressive place to live and high above the plains. They would be starting their new life as the great doors shut on their past and both looked forward to it.
