The pale sunlight shone through the dusty windows of the forgotten home, filling it with a gentle light. Dark green vines grew around the walls. This house had been abandoned by its previous owners long ago, yet somepony still called it their home. This somepony's name was Honey Storm. She specialized in giving tours around Ponyville to those who decided to visit while on vacation. Since Ponyville was quite a lovely town, there always were visitors from Fillydelphia and other places. Today, however, was this little Pegasus's day off. She'd usually spend the day lounging on the moth-eating sofa, and watching the wildlife run pass her home.

Today, however, was a special kind of day. Today was her birthday. She had a special surprise in store for her. "Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me…" she sang to herself, walking down to the bakery. She had saved up some bits, and was going to buy herself a cake. She entered the bakery, and greeted Mrs. Cake. "What can I interest you in today?" Mrs. Cake asked. "Oh, I'd just like a small round cake. Nothing fancy. Could you write, 'Happy Birthday Honey Storm' on it?" She replied. "Sure thing!" Mrs. Cake said, picking up a small, purple frosting covered cake. "Who's it for?" Mrs. Cake asks while putting the words on the cake with lime green frosting. Honey Storm looked down at the floor. "Nopony special. Just a…friend." She placed the bits on the counter, thanked Mrs. Cake, and walked off with the cake.

"Happy birthday to me…"

The purple-green cake promptly exploded, producing a big cel-shaded dust cloud; when the cloud cleared, the layer of icing remained, but underneath it was not a cake but a pony. A certain pink baker, her unreasonably curly mane filled with icing, her face filled with excitement.

"Haaaaaaappy birthday!" Pinkie squeaked enthusiastically. Bouncing up and down on the spot, she explained at a mile a minute: "So when you came into Sugarcube Corner I noticed you were buying a birthday cake and you were saying it was for just a… friend! With the uncomfortable ellipsis before the word 'friend' which obviously means it's really for yourself but why would you need to buy a birthday cake for yourself unless your friends weren't throwing you a party so I figured your friends weren't throwing you a party and that's just crazy so I hid inside your cake so I could throw you a surprise party! SURPRISE!"

The cake of course was quite a bit smaller than the pony who'd just burst out of it. "How did you-" Honey started to ask, only to be surprised again when the apparition pulled a huge blue cannon out of the cake remains. "- fit," she finished, flatly.

"Hey wait!" Pinkie froze. In the pause, her cannon fired, instantly decorating the room. "I think I don't actually know your name! It's probably on my head now but we don't have time to celebrity-heads it 'cause there's so much party stuff to set up! So hi!" She presented her hoof to Honey. "I'm Pinkie Pie!"

"You destroyed my cake," Honey said, bitterly.

Pinkie gasped dramatically. "Yeah! That does happen if you hide inside a cake and then burst out of it! And also pull a party cannon out of it! Hang on a sec!" She dove back into the cake's remains, front half hidden entirely amongst the crumbs. "Here ya go!" Popping up again, Pinkie tugged an exact replica of the first cake out of its remains. By way of explanation, she said "Cakes are kinda like phoenixes!" After dropping the cake onto the table, Pinkie proffered her hoof once more. "Let's try this again! Hi! I'm Pinkie Pie!"

"Honey Storm," said Honey Storm, with no small amount of scepticism as she shook the frankly crazed chef's hoof.

"Great! Nice to meetcha, Honey Storm!" Grinning broadly, Pinkie added "And happy birthday!"
