Title: Dreams III: Reprisal

Series: Transformers Prime

Pairings: Implied MegaOP if you really squint.

Disclaimer: I never would have thought of giant alien robots coming to earth, so I definitely don't own Transformers!

Notes: This is a companion fic to Dreams II: Blurred Lines.

Megatron often dreams of Orion Pax.

Sometimes the dreams are pleasant.

He dreams of the first time Orion Pax had contacted him. Megatronus had been pleased to know that his voice had reached those of the middle and upper castes, and he had been even more pleased to know that some even shared his ideals – a free Cybertron for all. Orion Pax had been one of those who shared his vision – or at least so Megatronus had believed at the time. Megatron most often dreams of what Cybertron would have been like if Orion Pax had stayed by his side; together they would have conquered and ruled over Cybertron, eliminating the castes, giving every mecha the chance for self-determination, and destroying any who dared to oppose their ideal.

Megatron recharges with a smirk, revelling in this dream.

Many times, however, the dreams are unpleasant.

He dreams of the moment when Orion Pax had betrayed him – that moment when Orion Pax, no, Optimus Prime had claimed what should have rightfully been Megatronus'. Their session before the High Council had been going according to his plan, until Orion Pax had wooed the Council members, and some of the audience, with his naïve vision of a peaceful change. The Council, in their cowardice and dislike for confrontation, had chosen to defer their responsibility to Orion Pax, appointing him Optimus Prime – the new leader of Cybertron. Worse yet, Orion…no, Optimus had accepted – though he played humble and innocent, never did he reject the title. Never before had Megatronus felt so betrayed and enraged. He remembered that Soundwave had often warned him that Orion Pax would betray him. He should have listened. Oh, how he wished he had listened. It was then and there, in the High Council Chamber, that Megatron – for he was Megatronus no more – vowed to destroy Optimus Prime and his wretched Autobots, no matter what the cost.

Megatron recharges with a feral grin, baring his sharpened denta, unaware of the light stream of tears flowing gently from his shuttered optics.

Occasionally, the dreams are nightmares.

He dreams of the many battles he's had with Optimus Prime, and the many times where he had not been able to kill him. Countless times he had come close to killing the troublesome Prime, yet each time he ended up failing to do so. It only served to enrage him further, as his vengeance was prolonged with each missed opportunity to destroy his enemy. Even worse, are the dreams where he loses to the Prime, dying an agonizing death, with the realization that Cybertron would never be his, and he would never achieve his revenge.

Megatron awakens from his recharge with a start, ventilating heavily as he struggles to calm his raging spark.

It is in these moments that he reminds himself of the one thought that keeps him going – Optimus…Orion could never kill him. He had known this from the first moment the former librarian had approached him with his guard down; azure optics searching crimson ones for any sign of the one he had once called his friend. Megatron knew this each time since then that they had met off the battlefield, blurring the lines between reality and history, as Orion sought his old friend, and Megatron gave him what he wanted. He especially knew it with the one, simple plea his enemy whispered each time they met.

'Please, let us end this war, Megatronus…'

Megatron never responds to the plea, but in the best of his dreams, he stares into the optics of the one who had stolen what had been rightfully his, and gives him the response he never expects.

'It is over.'

Clawed servos then plunge through the red chassis, crushing the spark of the one who had betrayed him so many eons ago, and reclaiming the treasure that should have been his from the start; and with the Matrix of Leadership in hand, Megatron watches shocked cerulean optics flicker and fade to black as Optimus Prime is finally defeated once and for all.

Megatron bolts awake from recharge with a smirk, which slowly morphs into a gleeful, savage grin, and then he laughs; a low chuckle at first, then it gradually grows louder and louder, until it soon becomes a booming rumble, echoing throughout the previously silent halls of the Nemesis.

Yes, Megatron often dreams of Orion Pax.

but he much prefers to dream of Optimus Prime's demise instead.
